AUSTIN, Texas – The women's basketball team held nationally ranked Texas to just 34 percent shooting, but the Longhorns were able to stave off the Big Red for a 53-40 victory at Frank Erwin Center on Thursday night. Allyson DiMagno had a team-high 13 points for Cornell, which fell to 5-5 on the season.

Cornell held perennial power Texas in check for the first half, trailing by just six points at the half. The Longhorns took control early with an 18-6 edge in the opening 11 minutes, but the Big Red responded with a 10-0 run to cut its deficit to just two points.

A Clare Fitzpatrick layup was followed by Stephanie Long's 3-pointer, making the score 18-11. DiMagno then hit a jumper with 5:24 left in the first half and – after a Texas turnover – drained a 3-pointer 40 seconds later to pull Cornell to within 18-16.

The Big Red got off to a good start in the second half with DiMagno's second 3-pointer and a pair of Spencer Lane free throws keeping the deficit at two points with 18:38 remaining. Fitzpatrick's layup a little more than four minutes later made the score, 29-25, but Texas then rattled off a 13-0 run to take control.

The Longhorns held a 48-28 advantage on the boards, with Long pulling down a team-high eight rebounds for the Big Red. DiMagno had seven rebounds to go with her 13 points, and Fitzpatrick had 10 points.

The game marked just the second time this season that Texas (7-2) has been held to fewer than 70 points in a game. It was also the second straight game in which Cornell yielded fewer than 55 points, having limited Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to just 52 points on Tuesday.

Cornell will have more than a week off before returning home to face William & Mary at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30 at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall.
