ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior 
Clare Fitzpatrick's layup with three seconds remaining gave Cornell a 51-50 win over Brown on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red improved to 11-13 overall and 5-5 in Ivy play, while the Bears fell to 15-10 (6-5 Ivy).
Shelby Lyman led the Big Red with 13 points, including 11 in the first half, and Fitzpatrick ended the evening with nine points and seven rebounds, including the game-winning basket. 
Maka Anyanwu notched eight points and 
Stephanie Long had seven in the win. The Big Red shot 43 percent from the floor and assisted on 16 of its 21 baskets. Cornell also won the battle of the boards 28-26, while the team had 11 steals. 
Allyson DiMagno was credited with five points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Brown was led by Lindsay Nickel's 16 points and six rebounds, while Lauren Clarke scored nine and grabbed four rebounds. The Bears turned the ball over 19 times, but made up for its with an 8-of-16 effort from beyond the arc. Nickel hit 4-of-7, while Clarke connected on 3-of-4. The win snapped a five-game win streak by Brown in the series.
Both teams set the nets on fire early, with the teams each scoring 11 points in the first four minutes. A 3-pointer by Clarke gave Brown a five-point edge (16-11), but the home team answered right back with long bomb by Lyman. The lead changed eight times in the first half with four additional ties before Nickel knocked out a trey to give Brown the lead back at 25-23 with two and a half minutes left. Big Red freshman 
Sarah Poland connected on a pair of free throws to knot the game at 25-25 at the break.
The second half would be more of the same as neither team led by more than seven when Cornell went on a 7-0 run after the Bears had knotted the game at 31-31. Anyanwu got the run started with a pair of free throws, followed by a DiMagno blocked shot that led to a three-point play on the break by 
Spencer Lane, who had five points and five assists. DiMagno closed out the run with a steal and layup to make it 38-31, forcing a Brown timeout.
The Bears made short work of the Big Red lead, going on a 9-0 run of its own to regain the edge at 42-40 with eight minutes to play. Fitzpatrick tied the contest, but a three-point play by Brown's Sheila Dixon seemingly gave the visitors the momentum back.
Cornell wouldn't fold. FIrst, 
Stephanie Long nailed a jumper, followed by a free throw by Fitzpatrick to tie. Anyanwu's free throw line jumper put Cornell into the lead again at 47-45 to start a final four minutes that featured four lead changes. Aileen Daniels got into the paint for a short jumper to put Brown up 50-49 with 17 seconds later, setting up Cornell's final possession. A killer screen by Fitzpatrick at the top of the key got got her a shot, but Brown's rebound attempt ended with a foot out of bounds, giving the Big Red the ball with four seconds left. Off the inbounds, Lyman found Fitzpatrick on a slip for a wide open layup to put the home team back in the lead with 3.3 seconds to play. Brown called a timeout, but its pass to halfcourt was fumbled out of bounds and the Big Red ran out the clock to claim the victory.
The Big Red returns to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. when it plays host to Yale at Newman Arena.
