FAIRFAX, Va. -- Sophomore
Jenny Edwards doubled in freshman Linda Laufer in the third inning and
Alyson Onyon and
Lauren Marx made it stand up as Cornell topped George Mason 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to close out the Big Red's competition on day one of the Mason Cherry Blossom Classic. The Big Red had dropped game one of the day to Bowling Green, 7-0. Cornell has an even slate at 4-4 this year.
Edwards doubled in Laufer after the freshman's double, and that was enough for Onyon. The sophomore hurler allowed just three hits and two walks in 6.2 innings of work, striking out eight to pick up the win. Marx came in with two runners on and two outs in the seventh and picked up a strikeout for her first save of the season.
The victory came hours after Bowling Green allowed just two hits, a double to
Kristen Towne and a triple by
Christina Villalon, but Cornell couldn't push a run across. The Falcons scored five times in the second and added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth.
Jenna Stoller came out of the bullpen to pitched three hitless innings, walking three and striking three out.
The Big Red will play a pair of contests on Sunday to complete its first three weekends of action at George Mason. Cornell is schedueld to play Albany at 1:30 p.m. and the host Patriots at 3:45 p.m.
