HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth used its control on the offensive glass to get second shots and overcome its 32 percent shooting in a 55-48 victory over Cornell on Friday evening at Leede Arena. The Big Red slipped to 11-15 (5-7 Ivy), while the Big Green improved to 5-21 (3-9 Ivy).
Clare Fitzpatrick had 19 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, while
Allyson DiMagno scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards, but it was 21 second chance opportunities and a 47-36 edge over in rebounding that propelled Dartmouth to the victory. Cornell shot just 27 percent after halftime and missed all six 3-point attempts.
Sasha Dosenko notched 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Faziah Steen tallied 11 points and three steals. Also reaching double figures was Nicola Zimmer with 10 points and six rebounds, while Milica Toskovic had seven points and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. The Dartmouth defense limited Cornell to just 20 points after the break to extend a 29-28 edge at the half.
The Big Red got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 10-2 edge just 3:29 into the contest with Fitzpatrick scoring three early buckets. From there, Cornell went cold. After starting the game 5-of-6 from the floor, the visitors made just 14-of-50 th rest of the way (28 percent). Dartmouth heated up as Cornell cooled down and the home team took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Zimmer exactly midway through the first half to go up 15-13. The Big Red tied the game at 21-21 on a 3-pointer by DiMagno with six minutes to play before halftime, but Dartmouth climbed its lead back to five. Cornell closed on another flurry, with a DiMagno 3-pointer and two buckets by Fitzpatrick evening the score at 28-28. The Cornell defense got a stop on Dartmouth's final possession of the half, but couldn't collect the defensive rebound. Dosenko corralled the errant shot and was fouled. Though she hit just the second of her two free throws, the extra chance gave the home team a 29-28 edge at the break.
The second half started out as more of the same. After a Cornell turnover, Steen hit a 3-pointer to put Dartmouth up 32-28. Only an 8-0 run midway through the half got the Big Red into the lead, briefly going up 40-38 when
Taylor Flynn worked her way into the lane for a basket. A minute later the game was tied, and Dosenko put the home team back in front with just under eight minutes remaining. The lead grew to a many as 11 and Cornell wasn't able to get back within six over the final five minutes,
Cornell closes out its 2011-12 road schedule on Saturday when it visits Harvard for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
