LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Cornell bats came alive and the Big Red took advantage to the tune of its first doubleheader sweep of the season, knocking off Liberty 7-0 in game one and 7-4 in game two on Thursday afternoon. The Big Red evened its record at 8-8, while the Flames slipped to 6-15.

The Big Red pounded out a season-high 16 hits, including three home runs, in the game on shutout, then added 13 more hits in scoring four in the seventh to take game two.

Cornell watched Liberty twice come back to answer scoring in game two, as the Big Red took leads of 1-0 and 4-1 only to see the Flames knot the score. Its three runs in the seventh proved to be too much as the Big Red handed Liberty its 11th straight setback. Freshman Linda Laeufer had an impressive 4-for-5 day in game two, and her two-run double in the seenth provided some cushion after Cornell regained the lead on a Clare Feeley fielder's choice. It was her second double of the day.

A Jenny Edwards fielder's choice drove in the lone run in the third, and Cornell pieced together three runs in the fifth on a hit batsman, a bases loaded walks and a single.

Feely was 2-for-4 in the nightcap, helping make a winner out of Alyson Onyon. The sophomore struck out nine in the complete game victory. She scattered six hits and surrendered three earned runs.

In game one, the Big Red scored in four straight innings, slamming three home runs in support of senior hurler Lauren Marx.

Cornell got on the board with the long ball in the second when Kristen Towne blasted a solo shot, then Laeufer hit her first career big fly with a two-run shot in the third to make it 3-0. The bats continued to stay awake, as Christina Villalon slammed a shot to left-centerfield to make it 4-0 in the fourth.

Cornell scored a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Towne and added an insurance run in the seventh on a Morgan Cawley single.

Marx went the distance in the circle for Cornell, surrendering three hits and a walk while striking out five in picking up the shutout. She didn't allow a baserunner past first until Kelby Allen, who had all three hits for the Flames, doubled to lead off the seventh. That would be where the runner was stranded.

Laeufer was 2-for-5 in the opener with two RBI, while both Towne and Cawley went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Also collecting multiple hits in the contest was Sam Creamer (2-for-3) and Christina Villalon (2-for-4).

The Big Red will head to Dover, Del. to begin a weekend set at Delaware State, including the Epilepsy Awareness tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Cornell will face the Hornets in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
