ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior attackman
Rob Pannell was named the Ivy League men's lacrosse Player of the Week and freshman linemate
Matt Donovan was named the conference's Rookie of the Week this afternoon. In addition, sophomore face-off specialist
Doug Tesoriero earned a spot on the Honor Roll.
Pannell, the reigning Ivy League and national Player of the Year, showed why he is one of college lacrosse's best in two victories last week, scoring seven goals and adding nine assists for 16 points in victories over Binghamton and Army. He opened the season with six goals and four assists in a 17-12 win over Binghamton, including scoring the game-tying and go-ahead goals late in the third quarter as Cornell rallied for the win. His 10-point game was the first by a Cornell player since 1995 and he became the 34th player in NCAA history to record 100 career goals and 100 career assists. During the game, he scored consecutive goals in the span of six seconds to set a school record. Then in a dominant 18-7 triumph over Army, who had lost at No. 3 Syracuse by a goal earlier in the week, Pannell had a goal and five assists in just three quarters of action. He added four ground balls, giving him six in the two games, and also caused a turnover. Last year, Pannell earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors four times.
Donovan jumped right into the starting lineup with Pannell and
Steve Mock and showed he will be an impact player in the 2012 season. In the two wins over teams receiving votes in the national polls, he scored five goals and posted three assists for eight points, while adding five ground balls. Donovan opened his career with a goal and an assist to go along with three ground balls in the win over Binghamton. He followed up with a six-point effort (four goals, two assists) to go along with two ground balls in a dominant 18-7 win over Army. The six points were the most by a Cornell freshman in a game since
Rob Pannell in 2008. He is the first Big Red player to earn Rookie of the Week honors since
AJ Fiore did so on April 19, 2010.
The Big Red will return to action on Tuesday, March 6 when it plays host to Canisius at 4 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
