4/15/2012 9:27:00 PM

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The men's tennis team won its first Ivy League match of the season Sunday, also notching its first victory at Yale since 2002. Sam Fleck, Jason Luu, Alex Sidney and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen all won singles matches to power the Big Red to a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs at Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

The victory halted a seven-match losing streak for Cornell (8-15, 1-4 Ivy League). Fleck and Nguyen both swept their two singles matches over the weekend and have each won three straight. Nguyen's 6-3, 7-5 over Zach Krumholz on Sunday gives him a team-high 12 victories on the season.

Yale (13-8, 2-2 Ivy) swept all three doubles matches, then won the No. 1 singles match to take an early 2-0 lead. Sidney then closed out a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kyle Dawson at the No. 5 spot to get the Big Red on the board, then Fleck's 6-3, 6-1 win over Marc Powers at No. 2 tied the score at 2. Nguyen pulled Cornell ahead, then Luu's three-set victory over Erik Blemnkranz clinched the match for the Big Red.

The victory was Cornell's 12th in 70 all-time meetings with Yale, but its also gives the Big Red three wins in the squads' last four meetings. The matches have been traditionally close, with the last 9-0 sweep by either team coming in 1997.
