Offense Powers Softball Into First Place With Sweep At Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Cornell offense exploded for 19 runs in completing a doubleheader sweep with 11-9 and 8-4 victories over Brown on Friday afternoon at Erickson Athletic Complex. The Big Red improved to 14-13 (5-1 Ivy), while the Bears slipped to 5-15 (2-4 Ivy).

Lauren Bucolo hit two more home runs in the nightcap, her sixth in six Ivy games this season. Cornell pounded out 22 hits on the afternoon, and coupled with Penn's doubleheader split with Dartmouth on Friday afternoon, moved into a tie atop the South Division with the Quakers at 5-1.

After falling behind 2-0 after four innings in game one, the Big Red exploded for nine runs in the fifth highlighted by Cawley's three-run shot to put the Big Red into the lead. Consecutive doubles by Laeufer, Edwards and Bucolo plated four more runs and Belles drove an RBI single to left.

Cornell also scored two runs in the sixth and held off the Bears late to claim its fourth straight Ivy win. The Big Red overcame seven walks, two errors and three home runs by the Bears in grinding out the victory.

The Big Red collected a total of 12 hits in the win and had five players with two hits apiece. Clare Feely, Erin Belles and Erin Keene each went 2-for-3, while Laeufer and Bucolo were each 2-for-5. Laeufer and Kristen Towne each scored twice to pace the offense. All nine starters scored at least one run.

Stoller picked up the win in the circle despite allowing six runs and seven walks. She struck out eight in her six innings of work before giving way to Lauren Marx, who surrendered a home run before retiring the Bears in the seventh for the victory.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair, as Cornell scored a run in the top of the first, only to have the Bears match in the bottom of the frame. The Big Red then regained the lead with two in the third inning, but Brown again responded to tie the contest in the bottom half of the inning.

Bucolo, who ended the nightcap 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and five RBI, put the visitors into the lead for good when she hit her fifth home run in six Ivy games with one out in the fourth to double up the Bears at 6-3. She added her sixth two innings later with a two-run insurance shot to make it 8-3.

Brown stranded seven runners in their final three at bats and 10 total on the day as Cornell pulled out hte victory. Marx stranded the bases loaded in the seventh, retiring the final two batters who came to the plate as the tying run.

Cornell will head to Yale for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
