WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Cornell women's rowing team placed 13th overall at the 2012 NCAA Women's Rowing National Championship, held this weekend on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Big Red finished one-point behind 12th place Radcliffe and six points in front of Ivy League foe Brown.
"I am so excited about the team's performance at NCAAs and placing 13th in the country,” said Hilary Gehman, the Staley Head Coach of Women's Rowing. “We had a great group of seniors leading us to this point, and this has been excellent race experience for the younger athletes on the team looking ahead to next year.”
The Varsity 4 was highest placing boat at the championship, placing fourth in the Petite Final to finish 10th in the nation, while the Varsity 8 took fifth in the Petite Final for 11th overall. The Second Varsity 8 finished second in the Third Level Final to place 14th in the nation.
"The Varsity 8 and the Second Varsity 8 found themselves in some tight races in their finals today,” said Gehman. “We rose to the challenge of the fierce competition here at NCAAs and we performed our best when it counted the most."
"I'm thrilled with the Varsity 4's top 10 finish,” added assistant coach
Liz Dennison. “The athletes gave it their all off the start and were able to put themselves in a competitive position, also having a great sprint at the end of the race."
