Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Big Red volleyball team used a powerful offensive attack to pick up its second win of the season, downing Central Connecticut State, 3-1, this morning at the Temple Invitational. Cornell is back in action this evening when it plays the host Owls at 5 p.m.
Cornell (2-6) hit .305 as a team, thanks in large part to
Rachel D'Epagnier's outstanding .545 hitting percentage (12-0-22), while and
Kelly Marble collected a team high 16 kills and
Breanna Wong chipped in 15, while hitting .250 and .314, respectively.
Ana Vanjak (7-2-16) and
Sarah Okey (9-3-22) also had productive mornings for the Big Red, while
Kelly Reinke ran the offense and handed out a game-high 55 assists.
Defensively, Marble posted a team-best 14 digs and D'Epagnier registered six block assists.
Sierra Young and Reinke also finished with 13 apiece digs apiece.
CCSU (5-7) had just two players register double-digit kills, as Blaike King and Emily Chochran finished with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Makenna Lommori handed out 37 assists and Brittany Schumacher had 13 digs.
In the first set, the teams battled back and forth to a 15-15 tie until a kill by Okey sparked a 5-1 to put Cornell up, 20-16. During the run, the Big Red also got a kill and a service ace from D'Epagnier. The Blue Devils would make it a two-point game (21-19) off a kill by King, but that was as close as it would get, as a kill by Wong and a service ace from Marble restored the momentum to the Big Red and carried Cornell to the 25-20 victory.
The second set began in a similar fashion, with the teams trading leads to 13-13 before a pair of kills by both Wong and D'Epagnier, and a service ace from Young, gave Cornell the 18-13 lead. CCSU pulled within three points twice down the stretch, but couldn't come all the way back as Cornell got a kill and a service ace from Marble to end the set with the 25-19 win.
The Blue Devils reversed the trend in the third set, battling to a 13-13 tie before using a pair of service aces from Veronika Ban to get some breathing room at 15-13. CCSU managed to hold the advantage until a kill by D'Epagnier and a service ace from
Brittany Ward knotted the game at 20-20. The set would be tied three more times before a ball handling error on the Big Red and a kill by Cochran gave the Blue Devils their only win of the match, 25-23.
Cornell stormed out to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set and never looked back as the rolled to the 25-13 victory.
