ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team will seek its first win of the season this weekend when it travels to Fordham's Rose Hill Classic, held Sept, 7-8, in the Bronx, N.Y. Cornell faces the host Rams on Friday morning (11:30 a.m.) and plays Bucknell that afternoon (4:30 p.m.). The following day, the Big Red will take on Stony Brook (9 a.m.) and NJIT (2 p.m.).
THE SERIES VS. FORDHAM: Cornell defeated the Rams in back-to-back seasons (1981-82) to account for both victories in the series. The last meeting was a 2-0 victory for the Big Red during the 1982 campaign.
VS. THE ATLANTIC 10: Cornell is 10-6 all-time against the current members of the Atlantic 10. The Big Red is a perfect 3-0 against both Duquesne and La Salle and is 2-0 against Fordham. Cornell also has a winning record against Temple (2-1), but a losing mark against Charlotte (0-1), Dayton (0-1) and George Washington (0-3). The Big Red has never faced Rhode Island, Saint Louis or Xavier in volleyball.
THE SERIES VS. BUCKNELL: Cornell first played the Bison in volleyball during the 1984 season, a 2-0 victory for the Big Red, which went on to win nine consecutive matches before Bucknell earned a 3-2 victory during the 1996 season. The teams have met twice since (2004, 2007) with Cornell winning both to improve to 11-1 in the all-time series.
VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: The Big Red is 85-38-1 against the current members of the Patriot League, thanks mostly to a 53-27-1 record over Colgate. Cornell also has a winning record against Army (6-1), Bucknell (11-1), Holy Cross (4-0), Lafayette (4-1) and Lehigh (5-2). The Big Red's series with Navy is tied at 2-2, while American is the only team in the Patriot League with a winning record against Cornell (4-0).
THE SERIES VS. STONY BROOK: Cornell is a perfect 3-0 against the Seawolves. The Big Red won the first match, 2-0, at the Mansfield Tournament during the 1980 season and earned back-to-back victories in 2000 (3-1) and 2001 (3-0).
VS. THE AMERICA EAST: Cornell is 38-10-2 all-time against the current members of the America East, thanks mostly to a 19-8-2 record against Binghamton. The Big Red holds a perfect record against Albany (7-0), Stony Brook (3-0) and New Hampshire (2-0) and also has a winning record against Hartford (6-1). Cornell is an even 1-1 with Providence and has never faced UMBC.
THE SERIES VS. NJIT: The game against the Highlanders will be the first in program history for the Big Red.
VS. THE GREAT WEST: Cornell is 1-0 against the current members of the Great West, thanks to a victory over Texas-Pan American during the 2006 season. The Big Red has never Chicago State, Houston Baptist, NJIT or Utah Valley in volleyball.
THE HEAD COACH: Cornell head coach
Melissa Batie-Smoose is in her first season at Cornell (0-3, .000) ... Batie-Smoose became the 10th coach in Cornell volleyball history in April 2012 ... She has an 87-65 (.572) record as a head coach, including a mark of 81-43 (.653) at Savannah College of Art & Design.
ALL-TOURNEY TEAM:
Rachel D'Epagnier was named to the Omni Hotel Colorado Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team. Over the course of the weekend, the junior middle blocker averaged 1.67 kills per set, while hitting a team-best .375. She also added 11 total blocks (four solo, seven assisted).

SEASON OPENERS: Cornell is 27-13-1 all-time in season openers. Since 1995, the Big Red is an impressive 14-4 in the first match of the season.

FRESH FACES: The Big Red adds four freshmen to the team this season - Brittany-Ann Kalepa (Honolulu, Hawaii),
Shannon O'Brien (Naperville, Ill.),
Brittany Ward (Friendswood, Texas) and
Breanna Wong (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). The group consists of two defensive specialists, a middle/outside hitter, and a rightside/outside hitter. The incoming class also draws from four different states, with the group representing Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois and Texas.
KIDS IN THE HALL: Jaimee Reynolds '02, who played both volleyball and women's lacrosse at Cornell, has been selected for induction into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame at the 36th annual ceremonies to be held Friday, Nov. 2 on the Cornell campus. The first four-time All-American in women's lacrosse and the third in any women's sport at Cornell, Reynolds was one of three finalists for national player of the year as a senior. Reynolds also lettered four times in volleyball and her 1,023 assists at setter in 2001 ranks among the top 10 marks in school history. She was the NCAA New York Woman of the Year and one of 10 finalists for NCAA Woman of the Year in 2002 and was a Honda Award finalist that same season.
40 YEARS OF BIG RED VOLLEYBALL: This season, the Big Red will be celebrating 40 years of volleyball at Cornell. The team will have a an official celebration in conjunction with its annual Alumni Weekend, to be held when it plays host to Yale on Friday, Sept. 28 and Brown on Saturday, Sept. 29.
UP NEXT: Cornell plays in its final tournament of the season next weekend at the Temple Tournament with Cornell opening up the morning session against Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 15 before taking on the host Owls in the nightcap. Cornell holds a winning record against both the Blue Devils (3-1) and Temple (2-1).
