ITHACA, N.Y.—The No. 6 Big Red wrestling team opened in 2012-13 Ivy season off strong on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Princeton 42-0 at home in the Friedman Wrestling Center.
Kyle Dake (165),
Jace Bennett (197) and
Jacob Aiken-Phillips led Cornell with pins, while
Mike Nevinger notched a win by technical fall. Freshman
Nahshon Garrett also added a bonus point for Cornell with a major decision at 125 pounds.
With the win Cornell improves to 6-2 (1-0 Ivy) on the season, while Princeton fell to 0-8 (0-1 Ivy).
The dual opened at 125 pounds, with Garrett facing Max Rogers. Garrett had a 4-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and two back points. The Big Red freshman racked up 2:42 in riding time in the first. Garrett chose to start the second down and nearly had a reversal but a stalemate was called and brought the action back to center. Garrett settled for an escape and added a takedown midway through the period. Rogers chose to start the third at neutral. Garrett grabbed a double leg takedown, and with 5:03 in riding time, won a 10-0 major decision.
At 133 pounds, sophomore
Bricker Dixon took on Andrew Hirai. Dixon had an early takedown and tilted his opponent for three back points. Hirai escaped, but with a double leg, Dixon took him down once again. Dixon immediately reversed his opponent from his starting down position in the second and grabbed another takedown. Hirai chose to start the third down and was awarded a point when Dixon was penalized for locking his hands. Hirai escaped, but with 3:40 in riding time, Dixon won a 12-5 decision.
Nevinger wrestled Kevin Moylan at 141 pounds. Nevinger had a takedown in the first and was working for a pin but time ran out in the period. Moylan chose to start the second at neutral. Nevinger had a go-behind takedown and tilted his opponent to take a 10-0 lead with three more back points. The Big Red junior chose to start the third down on the mat. Nevinger escaped and added another go behind takedown for an 11-0 advantage. Nevinger had his opponent in a leg cradle and with three back points won a 16-0 technical fall.
At 149 pounds,
Ryan Dunphy took on Zach Bintliff. Dunphy shot in and the two wrestlers went into a scramble. Dunphy came out on top for a takedown, but after 11 seconds, Bintliff escaped. Bintliff escaped from his choice down position in the second to tie the bout at 2-2. Dunphy immediately spun out of his down choice in the third. Dunphy added a takedown midway through the period. Bintliff escaped and looked to score right away. Dunphy stayed strong defensively to win a 5-3 decision.
Freshman
Chris Dowdy squared off against Seth Hazleton at 157 pounds. Dowdy had a double leg takedown, but Hazleton shook him loose 16 seconds later. Dowdy circled out of his down position in the second. Dowdy finished a leg sweep in the second to take a 5-1 advantage. Hazleton escaped in the third, but only after Dowdy had racked up over a minute in riding time. Dowdy countered a shot by the Princeton wrestler for a takedown to take a 7-2 lead. Hazleton escaped, and with seven seconds left in the period earned his first takedown. With 1:39 in riding time, Dowdy won an 8-5 decision.
At 165 pounds, No. 1 ranked Dake made quick work of Judd Ziegler pinning him in 37 seconds.
Marshall Peppelman hit the mat against Ryan Callahan at 174 pounds. Peppelman got caught in a dangerous position by Callahan early in the first period. The Princeton wrestler had a 5-0 lead with a takedown and three back points as he almost pinned Peppelman. The Big Red junior worked his way to an escape and had a takedown with 38 seconds left in the period to come within two points. Peppelman tilted Callahan off the whistle in the second to take a 6-5 lead. Peppelman chose bottom in the third, but Callahan immediately chose to let him up to neutral. With another takedown, and 3:20 in riding time, Peppelman won a 10-5 decision.
At 184 pounds, No. 4
Steve Bosak wrestled Scott Gibbons. Bosak grabbed a takedown a minute into the first and road out his opponent for the remainder of the period. Bosak chose down in the second and had a 3-0 lead with an escape. Gibbons chose to start the third at neutral. Bosak added another takedown and with 2:04 in riding time won a 6-0 decision. Cornell had a 30-0 lead going into the last two matches.
Bennett took on Dan Santoro at 197 pounds. The Big Red sophomore took an early 5-0 lead with a takedown and three backpoints on a tilt. Bennett brought his opponent back to parallel before turning him to win by fall in 1:56.
At heavyweight, Aiken-Phillips had a 2-0 lead in the first with a takedown midway through the period. The Big Red sophomore escaped from his opening down position in the second. Aiken-Phillips took down his opponent and turned him to win by fall in 4:41.
Cornell will continue Ivy League action next weekend as it hits the road to take on Brown and Harvard.
