Squash Prepares For Three Matches at Yale Round Robin

1/17/2013 10:02:00 AM

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The men's and women's squash teams are back in action this weekend with three matches at the Yale Round Robin. Both teams will play Middlebury at 5 p.m. Friday, Bates at 9 a.m. Saturday and George Washington at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The sixth-ranked Cornell women's team (6-1) rebounded from its first loss of the season to Yale on Saturday with resounding 9-0 victories over Brown and St. Lawrence on Sunday. Freshmen Abbey Foster and Reut Odinak are both still undefeated and are tied for a team-high six wins with senior co-captain Margaret Remsen.

The Big Red has won its only three meetings with Middlebury in the programs' history, including a 9-0 victory in last year's Williams Round Robin to kick off the campaign. The other meetings have also been 9-0 decisions in favor of Cornell in the second division of the national championships in 2003 and 2006. No. 11 Middlebury is 9-1 heading into a mid-week match with Hamilton, with its lone loss coming to No. 10 Williams on Jan. 11.

The all-time series between Cornell and Bates dates back to 1996-97, the Big Red's first season. Cornell holds an 8-6 advantage in the series with four straight victories, including a 9-0 sweep last season in a neutral-site match at Hamilton. No. 13 Bates features sophomore All-American Nesserine Ariffin at the No. 1 position and carries a 3-5 record into a mid-week match with Amherst.

Cornell and George Washington have met just once, with the Big Red nailing down a 9-0 victory on Feb. 1, 2003 in Annapolis, Md. during the Colonials' debut season. GW is 6-2 and ranked 12th heading into the weekend and will play Yale, Williams and Columbia before opposing Cornell.

The Big Red men's team (7-1) also took two of three matches last weekend, answering an 8-1 loss to Yale with a 9-0 whitewashing of Brown and a 6-3 triumph over St. Lawrence. Sophomores Aditya Jagtap and Ryan Todd are a team-best 7-1 this season, as is freshman Graham Dietz. All three of them won two of their three matches last weekend, as did seniors Nick Sachvie, Arjun Gupta and Owen Butler, and junior Bryan Keating.

Cornell and Middlebury have met just once before, with the Big Red emerging with a 9-0 victory on Nov. 19, 2011 in the season-opening Williams Round Robin. The Panthers were 9-2 and ranked 17th in the nation heading into a Tuesday match with Hamilton. They have been ranked as high as 13th this season before an 8-1 loss to then-No. 16 Navy on Nov. 30.

The Big Red is historically more familiar with Bates, leading the all-time series 12-5. Cornell secured a 9-0 victory over Bates at Hamilton last season, the second straight meeting in which it has shut out the Bobcats. Bates is ranked 14th in the country, coming off 8-1 losses to No. 2 Trinity and No. 12 Williams. Freshman Ahmed Abdel Khalek is 6-1 from the No. 1 position, including a five-game victory over Trinity's Juan Vargas last weekend.

Sunday's match with No. 15 George Washington (7-2) will be the first between the two programs. GW upgraded its men's program from the club to varsity level in 2003.
