Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Twenty-one first quarter points sparked the Big Red offense and helped sprint football to a 50-19 win over Princeton on senior night. The victory is Cornell's first of the season as the team improves to 1-4, while Princeton drops to 0-5.
Senior quarterback
Brendan Miller notched the first Big Red score of the night at the 12:01 mark of the first quarter. The Cornell drive started with when they team was able to fall on a Princeton fumbled snap deep in the Tigers zone. With the ball on the one-yard line, Miller kept the ball on a draw and punched it in for six. Classmate John Rodriquez added the extra point to make it 7-0.
Less than two minutes later, Cornell capitalized on another Princeton fumble – this time on a long snap during a punt attempt – when Miller connected with fellow senior
Spenser Gruenenfelder on a 12-yard pass for the touchdown. Rodriguez again added the extra point to increase the Big Red's lead to 14-0.
With the clock winding down in the first quarter Miller threw a perfectly-placed fade to the right corner of the end zone where he found freshman Robert Pannullo for the score.
Michael Zazzara stepped in to hit the extra point and give Cornell a 21-0 lead going in to the second.
The team's traded touchdowns in the second quarter, with
Benjamin Herrera punching in a four-yard run and his first of two scores on the evening. Herrera capped an 18-carry, 162-yard performance with a 55-yard rushing touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Gruenenfelder, who entered the contest as the Collegiate Sprint Football League's leading receiver, also grabbed two touchdowns against the Tigers. He and Miller connected for a 26-yard score at the 9:50 mark of the third quarter.
Rodriguez added a 35-yard field goal and senior
Nick Perez ran for a 13-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to finish the Big Red scoring.
Prior to Friday Cornell has scored just 30 points through four games. The win is the program's 21st consecutive against the Tigers dating back to 1989.
Princeton scored a touchdown in each of the last three quarters, but failed to convert two extra point attempts as one kick was blocked and a botched snap led to a failed two-point conversion.
The Big Red finished with 404 yards of total offense and Miller finished with 14 completions on 20 attempts for 148 yards.
