ABOUT THE BIG RED
Heading in to its final game of the 2013 season the Big Red will look to avoid having its worst finish since 1999, as the team earned only one victory that season. Currently 1-5, Cornell put up a good fight against undefeated Navy last weekend, heading to the locker room at the half only down 14-7. However, Navy's offense capitalized on excellent field possession after a Cornell three-and-out late in the third quarter to take a 21-7 lead and fully swing the momentum in the Midshipmen's direction. Navy added another touchdown in the fourth to seal the 28-7 win. The Big Red has finished in the middle of the pack the past four seasons and has the opportunity to go so again with a win over Mansfield.
THE HEAD COACH
Coach
Terry Cullen is now in his 50th season with the Big Red sprint football program and boasts a career record of 169-139-7 heading into this weekend's game. Cullen has been a member of the coaching staff since 1964 and spent 13 years as an assistant to his father, Bob Cullen, before the two shared head coaching responsibilities through the 1995 season. From 1996 to 2007, Terry served as the sole head coach of the program. He officially became the
Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football in 2001.
THE CO-HEAD COACH
In August 2008, Cornell announced that
Bart Guccia would assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions for the Big Red. Guccia is now in his eighth year with the team and has posted a 22-19 record, including the first five games of the 2013 season.
ABOUT MANSFIELD
Mansfield (1-5) is coming off a heartbreaking 27-24 loss in overtime at Franklin Pierce. After scoring a game-tying touchdown in the last minute of regulation and adding a field goal on the first possession in overtime, the Mountaineers games up a 37-yard touchdown on 2
nd and 22 to lose the game. The team is sixth in the CSFL in scoring average at 16.8 points per game and is also sixth in total offense, averaging 249.0 yards. The Mountaineers also boast the three top tacklers in the CSFL with Jake Myers (55.0), Jason Winters (48.0) and Jonathan Keller (44.0).
THE SERIES WITH MANSFIELD
Cornell has not lost a game to the Mountaineers in the history of the series, which began in 2008. The team's played twice that year; first in Mansfield where the Big Red enjoyed a 35-0 shutout and then again in the final game of the season on Schoellkopf Field. Although a closer contest than the first, Cornell downed Mansfield 38-28. During its current nine-game win-streak, the Big Red has outscored the Mountaineers 285-134. The teams only met once in 2012, as the addition to Franklin Pierce to the CSFL filled the schedule for both.
A WIN AGAINST MANSFIELD WOULD…
…be Coach
Terry Cullen's 170
th program victory and the team's tenth straight against the Mountaineers.
CLASS OF 2014
Eleven seniors won their last game on Schoellkopf Field on Oct. 11 against Princeton and will look to win the last game of their careers on Karl Van Norman Field. The class currently has a 13-14 record through four seasons at Cornell, and finished 8-8 at home. Members of the class include: John Rodgriguez,
Nick Perez,
Brendan Miller,
Steven Ham,
Kyle Higgins,
John Kelder,
Mike Angelo, Alex Duke,
Keegan Colletier,
George Wigsten and
Spenser Gruenenfelder.
ROUGH START
The last time Cornell sprint football started a season 0-4 was in 1989. The team finished 1-6 overall with a 1-4 record in the Eastern Lightweight Football League – which was the Collegiate Sprint Football League's moniker until 1998.
LEADING WIDEOUT
The Big Red's
Spenser Gruenenfelder was unseated as the CSFL's leading wide receiver this week after being atop the list all season. Princeton's Chris McCord has 27 receptions for 411 yards and two touchdowns, while Gruenenfelder has grabbed 25 passes for 294 yards and a pair of touchdowns of his own. His season-high thus far is seven-catch, 132 yard performance in Cornell's season opener at Post. He grabbed his first two touchdowns of the season against Princeton on Oct. 11.
PICK THIS
Freshman
Christopher D'Ambrosio is second in the CSFL with three interceptions this season; he had one against Navy in Annapolis last weekend, while both of the others came against Princeton at home. D'Ambrosio has 30 tackles this season, include 21 solo stops and five tackles for a loss.
UNDER CENTER
After missing just his second game in three seasons, senior quarterback
Brendan Miller is no longer ranked among the CSFL's passing leaders. He has thrown for 610 yards on 64 completions with five touchdowns this season and is just 257 yards short of 4,000 for his career. His last time out against Princeton, Miller completed 70 percent of his passes and connected for three touchdown passes – more than he had thrown in all four previous games combined. Miller has served as the primary option for the Big Red under center for the past two seasons; but freshman quarterback Robert Pannullo got the nod last week against the Midshipmen, going 18-40 for 192 yards and connecting with
Michael Crawford for his first career touchdown pass.
ALL-CSFL RETURNERS
Following the 2012 season 16 Cornell athletes were recognized by the CSFL as all-league players; first team, second team and honorable mention. Of the five named to the CSFL First Team only two are back for the 2013 campaign: Miller and senior punter/kicker
John Rodriguez. Three of the second-teamers –
Kyle Higgins,
John Kelder and
Michael Monahan – will suit up again for the Big Red, as will two of the honorable mention selections:
Spenser Gruenenfelder and
Bennett Winters.
