Women's Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep with 6-4 Win Over St. Lawrence

10/26/2013 6:54:00 PM

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. - After trailing for the first time in the young 2013 season, Cornell women's hockey got goals from five different players, and three on the powerplay to beat St. Lawrence 6-4 and sweep its first ECAC Hockey weekend.

Senior co-captain Jessica Campbell scored twice and Jillian Saulnier, Emily Fulton, Alyssa Gagliardi and Kelly Murray each added a tally, as ten players contributed on the score sheet for the Big Red, which outshot St. Lawrence 45-25 in the contest.

Cornell was pushed back into its defensive zone early when quick penalty calls on Hanna Bunton and Cassandra Poudrier tested the five-on-three penalty kill unit. The Big Red was successful on the kill but constant offensive pressure by the Saints on the powerplay gave the visitors the momentum to tally the first goal of the game.

At the 8:14 mark of the first period, Margo Lund sent a pass from the right point to Abbey McRae in the circle. McRae's wrister was saved by Cornell netminder Lauren Slebodnick, but Slebodnick was unable to reign in the rebound as the Saints' Rylee Smith crashed the net and beat her far side to go up 1-0.

Cornell got a powerplay opportunity of its own just over two minutes later and wasted little time getting on the board, tying the game at one just 40 seconds in when Fulton connected with Saulnier on a cross-crease pass, which Saulnier redirected past Carmen MacDonald. Alyssa Gagliardi got the play started with solid work in the corner, before getting a pass away to Fulton.

St. Lawrence took another penalty 27 seconds later to put Cornell back on the powerplay. The Big Red's top unit – skating against a tired St. Lawrence foursome – scored its second goal in one minute and thirty seconds on a scrum in front of MacDonald.

When a Hayleigh Cudmore slapshot from the right point was block, Campbell jumped on the loose puck at the left hashmarks, but was stopped by the Saints' netminder. Fulton was waiting at the far post to put home the rebound and give Cornell a 2-1 lead.

For most of the game, the Big Red kept one forward high and was aggressive on the forecheck, keeping the St. Lawrence defenders on their heels and forcing turnovers in the defensive zone and in neutral ice; making any type of transition offensive impossible.

Midway through the second period the aggressive Big Red forecheck paid off. With freshman Kaitlin Doering and Gagliardi in deep, senior Saints' co-captain Dayle Wilkinson tried to send a pass out of the zone. Doering deflected the pass attempt to Gagliardi, who was able to get a shot away after falling to her knees that trickled between MacDonald's legs for a 3-1 Cornell lead.

St. Lawrence was able to pull back within one after creating traffic in front of Slebodnick at the 13:28 mark of the second period with a goal that played out much like Cornell's second goal.

Defenseman Ellie Williams' shot from the right point was blocked in front before Slebodnick made a save on Kayla Raniwsky in close. The Saints pinched in to corral the rebound, and Jessica Hon beat the sprawling Cornell goaltender short-side to make it a 3-2 game.

But a Cornell breakout late in the second gave the Big Red the momentum it needed, as they would score three goals in just over 13 minutes to help secure the win.

With just under a minute and a half remaining the second, defensemen Morgan Richardson played a pass out of Cornell's defensive zone to Emily Fulton who was moving along the right boards through neutral ice with speed. Fulton sent a cross-ice saucer pass through two St. Lawrence defenders to Campbell who had snuck in behind on the left side. Campbell beat an unsuspecting MacDonald high on the blocker side to give Cornell a 4-2 lead heading into the final period.

Less than two minutes into the third, Cornell was awarded another powerplay opportunity on a Jacqueline Wand interference call. It was the second unit that would cash in for the Big Red this time, when sophomore Kelly Murray netted her first collegiate goal at the 3:04 mark.

MacDonald made two saves on the play, stopping both Taylor Woods and Hanna Bunton, but gave Cornell one too many extra chances, as Murray was able to jump on the rebound at the bottom of the left circle and net the eventual game-winner for the Big Red.

Jessica Campbell got her second of the night midway through the third, again taking a feed from Fulton on the right boards. This time Campbell skated in, deked by a defender and put a soft backhand into the pads of MacDonald. It appeared as though the Saints netminder had made the stop, but as she flopped to cover the puck it trickled in behind her for the Big Red's sixth and final tally of the afternoon.

Down 6-2 with six minutes to play, the Saints turned it on and pushed Cornell back on defense for much of the remainder of the game. Brooke Webster scored her first of two goals at the 14:19 mark, putting the rebound from a Ellie Williams' shot past Slebodnick to pull within three.

Just over three minutes later, with the St. Lawrence net empty for the extra attacker, Webster struck again; this time with a redirection at the top of the crease.

Dayle Wilkinson started the scoring play with a pass from the right faceoff dot to Mel Desrochers on the point. Desrochers skated in and blasted a slapshot along the ice, and Webster got enough of it to beat Slebodnick and make it a 6-4 game and conclude the scoring.

The win is the 150th of Head Coach Doug Derraugh's tenure and helped Cornell to its fifth consecutive sweep of an ECAC Hockey opening weekend, as the team has took the first two conference games every season since '09-'10.
The Big Red improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Saints fall to 2-6 and 1-1 against conference opponents.
