ABOUT THE BIG RED
The Big Red is still looking for its first win in 2013 after being doubled up by Penn in the team's home opener on Schoellkopf Field last weekend. Cornell finished the 2012 season fourth in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) with a 3-3 record against league opponents (4-3 overall). The Big Red has finished in the middle of the pack the past four seasons, and will look to get back to the top of the league in 2013. The coaching staff named five captains for the season:
Kyle Higgins,
Brendan Miller,
Michael Monahan,
Chris Sitko and
Bennett Winters.
THE HEAD COACH
Coach
Terry Cullen is now in his 50th season with the Big Red sprint football program and boasts a career record of 168-137-7 heading into this weekend's game. Cullen has been a member of the coaching staff since 1964 and spent 13 years as an assistant to his father, Bob Cullen, before the two shared head coaching responsibilities through the 1995 season. From 1996 to 2007, Terry served as the sole head coach of the program. He officially became the
Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football in 2001.
THE CO-HEAD COACH
In August 2008, Cornell announced that
Bart Guccia would assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions for the Big Red. Guccia is now in his eighth year with the team and has posted a 21-17 record, including the first three games of the 2013 season.
ABOUT ARMY
The Black Knights have outscored opponents 114-30 through the first three weeks of the season in 2013 and have the number two offense in the CSFL averaging 402 yards per game. Junior quarterback James Wartski is the league's current passing leader with 805 yards and nine touchdown passes. Sophomore Tucker Van Dyke is the Black Knights number one receiving option, as he and Wartski have connected on 11 passes for 213 yards and one Army touchdown.
THE SERIES WITH ARMY
The Big Red first faced off against the Army sprint football team in 1957 when the league was known under its original moniker the Eastern 150-pound Football League. Army has a commanding series lead over the Big Red at 55-18-0 and has won the past two matchups, outscoring Cornell 79-30.
A WIN AGAINST THE BLACK KNIGHTS WOULD…
…give Cornell its first win of the 2013 season and the first win over the Black Knights since 2010. Cornell doubled up Army in West Point that season to win 20-10.
#IVYDIGITAL
The remaining two home games for the Big Red will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network. The link to purchase the games will be accessible in the minutes leading up to the scheduled start times. To purchase an Ivy League Digital Network pass go to

AROUND THE CSFL
The Penn and Navy game scheduled for this Friday night was cancelled, as the Department of Defense cancelled all Naval Academy varsity and club sports through Sunday as a result of the government shutdown with the exception of the varsity football matchup against Air Force. There is a possibility the CSFL game will be rescheduled if time allows. This will be the second week Navy has not played a scheduled contest; Princeton forfeited its game against the Midshipmen on Sept. 20. Navy is currently tied with Army atop the CSFL standings at 3-0 and has the league's leading defense.
ROUGH START
The last time Cornell sprint football started a season 0-3 was in 2004. The Big Red exploded for 32 points in its fourth game that season, after having only scored 24 in the first three games combine, and beat the Princeton 32-19. The Big Red finished the 2004 season with a 2-4 overall record, 2-2 in the CSFL.
LEADING WIDEOUT
The Big Red's
Spenser Gruenenfelder leads all CSFL receivers with 15 receptions heading into week four. Gruenenfelder has amassed a total of 200 yards through the air thanks in large part to a seven-catch, 132 yard performance in Cornell's season opener at Post. He is the only ranked wide receiver in the league without a touchdown this season.
UNDER CENTER
Senior quarterback
Brendan Miller has served as the primary option for the Big Red under center for the past two seasons; missing only one game in that time span because of a concussion. Through his first three seasons Miller accumulated 3,133 passing yards and threw for 26 touchdowns, while rushing for another 10 scores. He finished second in the league in passing in 2012 and was the CSFL First Team Quarterback.
ALL-CSFL RETURNERS
Following the 2012 season 16 Cornell athletes were recognized by the CSFL as all-league players; first team, second team and honorable mention. Of the five named to the CSFL First Team only two are back for the 2013 campaign: Miller and senior punter/kicker
John Rodriguez. Three of the second-teamers –
Kyle Higgins,
John Kelder and
Michael Monahan – will suit up again for the Big Red, as will two of the honorable mention selections:
Spenser Gruenenfelder and
Bennett Winters.
