POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 19 Cornell Men's Hockey team fought back from a two-goal deficit Friday night, but conceded a goal with 38 seconds remaining to drop a 3-2 decision to No. 11/11 Clarkson at Cheel Arena. John McCarron and Brian Ferlin scored power-play goals for the Big Red, which fell to 3-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in ECAC Hockey.

Allan McPherson scored two goals for Clarkson (10-2-1, 4-1), including the winner in the game's final minute. Cornell had the puck in its own zone and an open breakout pass, but the puck caromed off an official and Clarkson took advantage. Jeff DiNallo got loose in the left corner and found McPherson charging toward the net. Cornell goalie Andy Iles (23 saves) made the initial stop, but McPherson lifted a rebound high into the net to extend the Big Red's winless streak to four games (0-3-1).

Ferlin tied the game at 2 with 7:23 to play in the third with his third goal of the season. Joel Lowry took a shot from the right circle that deflected across the ice to Ferlin, who was open on the back side to convert just inside the left post.

It was a considerable comeback given how the game started. Clarkson scored on the first shift of the game, just 45 seconds in. Iles made a terrific save on Pat Megannety, when he charged toward goal from the left circle, but Ben Sexton found space in the slot to lift the rebound into the net.

Cornell stood its ground on the first power play of the game, which belonged to Clarkson. Iles then kept the Big Red to within one by getting his left pad to a backhand shot by Kevin Tansey, who came down the middle on a late-developing three-on-two at the 7:53 mark. Iles made six saves before the Big Red started to take over territorially about midway through the frame.

The shots on goal for the opening 20 minutes were officially 7-2 in favor of the home side, but Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis was forced to make a spectacular save on Lowry at the 16:37 mark. Jake Weidner set up the play with a pass from the bottom of the right circle to Lowry at the top of the crease, but Lewis flashed his right pad across to make the save. Madison Dias had the other Big Red shot from the left circle.

The second period featured plenty of chances for both sides and a little animosity, too. Clarkson took a two-goal lead on when a puck couldn't be cleared after bouncing around in the slot, eventually squirting loose to McPherson skating in on the right side. He was able to put the puck past the left skate of Iles at the 5:09 mark.

But the Big Red responded. Tempers flared with seven players going to the penalty box at the 9:54 mark, leaving Cornell with its second power play of the game. Joakim Ryan took a shot from the center point that Lewis got his catching glove to, but the puck caromed back into the slot. Dustin Mowrey got to the rebound, which Lewis also saved, but McCarron swooped in to score his second goal of the year and cut the Big Red's deficit to 2-1 with 9:21 to play in the second.

The goal seemed to spark Cornell, which continued to put on pressure. McCarron made a bid to equalize at 12:06 with a heavy slap shot from the right circle that hit Lewis in the right shoulder before trickling just wide of the far post. A floating pass by Lowry to McCarron set up another chance with 1:08 left in the period, but Lewis made the save and an even better save on a rebound attempt from Jeff Kubiak.

Ferlin's goal in the third pulled him into a tie for the team lead in goals with three, joining Lowry, Ryan and Mowrey. The Big Red was outshot on the night, 26-11, and has yet to outshoot its opponent in a game this season. Cornell surrendered just one power play after going shorthanded just twice in its last game at Union.

Cornell concludes its season-high stretch of four consecutive road games at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it takes on 17th-ranked St. Lawrence just down the road in Canton. St. Lawrence (6-3-2, 2-1-2 ECAC Hockey) lost to Colgate, 5-3, on Friday night.
