Box Score BOSTON – No. 3 Cornell's top line notched three third period goals to help erase an early two-goal deficit and earn a 3-3 tie against No. 6 Harvard at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center Friday night.
The comeback helps Cornell remain unbeaten at 7-0-2 overall and 5-0-2 against ECAC Hockey opponents. The Big Red is also 1-0-1 against Ivy League foes this season.
Harvard jumped out in front of the Big Red just 1:39 in to the first period when Miye D'Oench intercepted a Cornell pass in the neutral zone and put a wrist shot from the slot low, past Cornell's
Lauren Slebodnick.
The Big Red has been plagued by slow starts of late and Harvard clogged the passing lanes and forced turnovers to limit Cornell's time of possession in the first period.
The Crimson struck again at the 16:20 mark of the first when Sarah Edney skated in and left a drop pass of D'Oench in the left circle. D'Oench's shot was initially stopped by the big left pad of Slebodnick, but Sydney Daniels – who had been trailing the play – was right on top of the senior netminder to put home the rebound and give the Crimson a two goal lead heading into the first intermission.
It was the first time this season Cornell has trailed a team by two goals.
Cornell came out strong in the second and outshot the Crimson 12-1, but couldn't solve one of the league's top goaltenders, Emerance Maschmeyer, who entered tonight's contest with a 1.00 goals-against average and .963 save percentage.
The Big Red started the third period a man up, and
Jessica Campbell wasted no time as she cut the Harvard lead in half just 41 seconds in and tallied the first power-play goal against the Crimson this season.
Campbell took a feed from freshman
Hanna Bunton and came streaking down the left boards into the Harvard zone. The senior co-captain put a hard wrist shot on net from the top of the circle, and although Maschmeyer made the initial stop, the puck trickled behind her into the net.
One minute and eight seconds later, Saulnier netted her first of the night when she redirected a pass from behind the net by
Emily Fulton in between Maschmeyer's legs to tie the game at two. Campbell also picked up an assist on the play, as she sent the puck into the corner to Fulton to keep the play alive.
Harvard regained the lead with a Mary Parker wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Slebodnick high on the glove side at the 3:17 mark.
With just over four minutes to play, Saulnier beat Maschmeyer again in close when she tipped a shot by Fulton from the left point. Senior defenseman
Hayleigh Cudmore was also credited with an assist on the game-tying tally.
In overtime it was Harvard that started the period with a man-advantage, but the Big Red penalty kill unit was strong in the extra session and kept Cornell alive.
Cornell's best chance came in the last ten seconds has Campbell came in one-on-one against Maschmeyer for a final shot, but the Crimson netminder stopped the senior point blank to preserve the tie.
Cornell travels to Dartmouth on Saturday for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
