ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team won three games, including an exciting win in the finals over defending national champion Virginia, to claim the William S. Field Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red improved to 7-2 on the season.
In Sunday's championship match, the Cavaliers scored first and then saw Cornell's
Devin Cox,
Anna Winslow and
Elena Wicker post five straight. Virginia tallied two of their own to make it 5-3 after one. The second saw a defensive battle as Cornell edged out to a three-goal lead to go up 8-5 at the break.
Emma Eldredge replaced
Elena Wicker in the third and the Cavaliers quickly closed the gap to 9-8. The Big Red went on a three-goal run to end the third chukker, going into the fourth with a 13-8 advantage. The fourth was an offensive explosion as the teams scored six goals apiece to make the final score 19-14 in favor of Cornell. Winslow tallied eight goals, Cox had seven with Wicker and Eldredge each scoring one. The Big Red was also credited with two penalty goals.
The Big Red advanced to the finals withj conseuctive comfortable wins over UMass (19-5) and Kentucky (27-6). Cornell never trailed in either match, posting big leads in the first chukker and then cruising home in both contests.
Stephanie Rogers led the Big Red with seven goals against UMass, with Maddy Olberg and
Claire Stieg tallying five each and Izzy Frieden scoring twice. Against the Wildcats,
Devin Cox and
Elena Wicker scored eight apiece with
Anna Winslow putting up six and
Emma Eldredge five for the home team.
