SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior goaltender
Andy Iles made 28 saves, but the offense came up dry for the No. 14/15 Cornell men's hockey team Saturday night in a 3-0 loss at Messa Rink. Union goaltender Colin Stevens needed to make just 11 saves for the shutout, marking the second time this season that the Big Red has been blanked.
The scoreless first period featured 10 shots on goal from Union compared to just two from Cornell, but the scoring chances in the frame were nearly equal.
The Dutchmen's Matt Krug shook free at the point and made his way into the left circle before snapping a shot that required Iles to make a save with a shrug of his left shoulder at the 8:05 mark.
A little more than two minutes later, the Big Red started to gain an edge in possession and made two significant bids to take an early lead. After a Union defensive zone turnover, defenseman
Jacob MacDonald maneuvered around a defender and had a shot from in tight that forced a save from Stevens. At 12:22,
John McCarron wristed a shot from the high slot that sailed through traffic and off the right post.
Union then countered with a few threats in the final minutes. Daniel Ciampini was allowed to swoop in from Iles' right at 17:50, but the Cornell goaltender stayed with the puck along the ice and the defense cleared the rebound. A point shot then found its way through about six bodies in the final seconds, but Iles somehow made the save.
Cornell pressed early in the second, but the Dutchmen ended up breaking the ice at the 7:31 mark on Cole Ikkala's conversion of a second rebound in the slot. The first power play of the game didn't come until just 2:38 remained in the period, but Union's man advantage was stymied – including a full two minutes of kill time from forward
Madison Dias and defensemen
Clint Lewis and
Kirill Gotovets.
The Big Red shuffled its lines in search of some offense in the third period, but nothing cracked the Union defense. The home side then doubled its lead when Shayne Gostisbehere got loose on the back door and converted an Eli Lichtenwald pass with 7:38 remaining.
Matt Wilkins then capped the scoring with less than three minutes remaining on a two-on-one break, with the Big Red pushing to find some offense.
Cornell continues its swing of four straight road games next weekend. After visiting Clarkson at 7 p.m. Friday in Potsdam, the Big Red will make the short trip west to take on St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Saturday in Canton.
