Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Big Red women's basketball team ended RMU senior Artemis Spanou's streak of 33 consecutive double-doubles, but three other Colonials finished in double-digits, to lead the home team to a 76-63 victory this afternoon at the Sewall Center in Moon Township, Pa. The 33 consecutive double-doubles was the second longest streak in NCAA history, but Spanou, who averages 17.3 ppg., and 14.1 rpg., finished the game with just eight points and six rebounds.
Cornell (5-5) was led by
Allyson DiMagno's 19 points and seven rebounds, while
Nia Marshall tallied 14 points and four boards. Freshman guard
Kerri Moran was the only other Big Red player in double-digits (11), while
Stephanie Long,
Shelby Lyman and
Aspen Chandler registered five points apiece. Moran also handed out a team-high three assists and had three rebounds.
RMU's Kelly Hartwell finished with 18 points, while Ashley Ravelli and Lou Mataly had 12 and 10, respectively. Three other Colonials finished with at least eight points as RMU's bench outscored Cornell's 36-9.
Cornell shot a blistering 50 percent (9-18) in the first half, but the Colonials were equally hot, knocking down 40 percent (12-30) and taking advantage of 10 offensive boards for nine second-chance points to build a 34-29 first half lead. RMU was even better in the second half, hitting 55.2 percent of its shots (16-29) as it eventually pulled away for good. The Big Red hit 45.5 percent (10-22) in the second half to finish at 47.5 percent for the game.
The Colonials held the 32-26 edge in rebounds and assisted on 22-of-29 baskets. They also turned the ball over just 15 times, with Cornell registering only four steals to end a three game streak of double-digit steals.
Both teams' offenses were impressive in the early going, trading baskets before a Moran jumper from the left elbow opened a 6-0 Big Red run that gave the visitors a 10-5 lead at the 16:30 mark. RMU managed to make it a one-point game (12-11) on a layup from Jolie Olingende and again (15-14) on a 3-pointer from Anna Stamalamprou, but each time the Big Red answered.
Spanou knotted the game at 16-16 with a pair of free throws at the 11:23 mark, but a driving lay-up from Moran on the next play returned the lead to Cornell. Moments later, Moran picked off a Colonial cross court pass and went the distance to lay it in and put the Big Red up, 20-16 with just over nine minutes to play in the opening half.
RMU earned its first lead since 1:40 in the contest with seven unanswered points, including a traditional three-point play from Olingende to go up, 23-20 at the 7:00 mark. Three consecutive points from DiMagno tied the game again at 23-23.
After trading baskets, a pair of made free throws by
Megan LeDuc returned the lead (27-25) to Cornell with 3:24 on the clock. Neither team managed much offense over the next few minutes, but five straight points by Hartwell, including a traditional three-point play with 29 seconds to go, gave the home team a three-point lead and a driving layup by Janee Brown with four seconds on the clock made it a 34-29 advantage at the half.
After Mataly hit a jumper as the shot clock expired on the first possession of the half, Cornell got consecutive layups from Marshall and DiMagno to make it a three-point game (36-33). Back-to-back ridiculously deep treys by Ravelli gave the home team its largest lead of the game (44-35), and a driving layup from Hartwell pushed RMU's lead to double-digits with just over 13 minutes to play.
A running jumper from Moran stopped the Colonials run and the Big Red made it a six-point game on a pair of free throws from DiMagno with just less than 10 minutes to play.
The teams continued to trade baskets before RMU extended its lead back to double-digits with another deep trey, this time from Mataly, with 5:07 on the clock, and from there the teams traded baskets to the 76-63 final.
Cornell will close out the 2013 portion of its schedule when it plays host to Drexel at Newman Arena on Monday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
