WASHINGTON — The baseball team used a six-run first inning to win the second game of a Sunday doubleheader at George Washington. The Colonials took the first game, 1-0 in eight innings, to win the series before Cornell avoided the sweep with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
Cornell (4-4) wasted no time jumping on George Washington (3-10) starter Danny O'Donnell. Senior
Spenser Souza led off with a double down the left-field line, then scored on sophomore
JD Whetsel's single up the middle. Sophomore
Matt Hall's one-out single scored Whetsel from second, then classmate
Kevin Tatum followed with another base hit to put two runners on.
Junior
Ben Swinford smacked the second double of the frame into left, scoring Hall and moving Tatum up to third. That chased O'Donnell, but didn't end the onslaught. Senior
Brenton Peters draw a walk to load the bases, then
Ryan Plantier singled to left to drive in two more runs and
Both Swinford and Tatum scored on
Ryan Plantier's single to left, pushing the score to 5-0. Another run came in to score on a throwing error, staking the Big Red to a six-run lead before the Colonials even came to bat.
Sophomore
Brent Jones improved to 2-0, going four innings in his second start of the season. Just like in Jones' first start, classmate
Roberto Suppa was effective as the long reliever. He surrendered one earned run while scattering three hits. He also struck out two.
Cornell's seventh run came in the fourth inning, with all of the damage coming with two out. Swinford singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. A Peters walk put runners on the corners, then Swinford scored on Plantier's single to right.
The Colonials threatened in the ninth, scoring two runs and putting the tying run on first base before senior
Houston Hawley induced a game-ending flyout to center.
George Washington (3-10) won Sunday's opener on an unearned run in the eighth inning (the first game of a doubleheader is scheduled to go seven innings). Sophomore
Nick Busto had a stellar start for the Big Red, surrendering just two hits in a career-high six innings of work. He walked two and fanned three. Both of Cornell's hits were singles, courtesy of Whetsel and Souza.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend with a three-game set Saturday and Sunday at Appalachian State in a matchup of NCAA tournament qualifiers from 2012.
