ORLANDO, Fla. – Sophomores
Alex Sidney,
Sam Fleck and
Jason Luu won three consecutive matches to erase a two-point deficit and propel the men's tennis team to 4-3 victory Wednesday at Central Florida.
Ranked 33rd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the Big Red started the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Luu and classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen competed at the No. 1 position for the first time this season, defeating the Golden Knights tandem of Amar Hromic and Jorge Blasco, 8-3. Sophomore
Kyle Berman and Fleck teamed up for an 8-6 victory at the No. 2 spot, giving Cornell the opening point.
Cornell (11-4) then quickly fell behind in singles after an injury retirement at No. 1 and a quick Golden Knights victory at the No. 4 spot. One more Central Florida (9-7) win put Cornell on the brink before it stormed ahead to win in dramatic fashion. Fleck dropped just three games in his win over Jose Sangroniz at the No. 2 position, then Sidney staved of Hromic in a lengthy three-set match, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
That left the balance of the match in the No. 5 match. UCF's Juan Bolona took the first set, but Luu rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker before sailing to the win in the third set, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Cornell will conclude its Spring Break trip with a match at South Florida at 2 p.m. Friday.
