Box Score
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Senior
Spenser Souza went 2-for-3 with a two-run double as part of the baseball team's five-run fourth inning in a 6-2 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday in the UMES Tournament. Cornell finished the tournament with three wins and one loss.
Sophomore
Kevin Tatum got the Big Red's big inning started with a leadoff single. Classmate
Matt Hall also singled, and junior
Ben Swinford was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, junior
Ryan Plantier drove in Tatum and Hall, then Souza followed with a double to push the Big Red's lead to 4-0. Senior
Brenton Peters later hit a two-out double to plate Souza.
Sophomore
Brent Jones earned the victory with three scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He surrendered back-to-back hits to lead off the UMES half of the second, but then struck out the side with two runners in scoring position to escape the jam.
Sophomore
Roberto Suppa piggybacked Jones' start with a career-high four innings of work, scattering four hits while working around a pair of walks. He struck out one, with the lone run surrendered coming on a pair of two-out hits in the seventh to draw the Hawks back to a 5-1 deficit.
Cornell extended its lead back to five runs in the top of the ninth. Tatum drew his last of three walks on the day, followed by another free pass to Hall. After a second wild pitch of the inning allowed Tatum to reach third, he came home on Swinford's RBI groundout to close out the visitors' scoring on the day.
The Big Red hits the road again next weekend when it plays George Washington in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
