Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red field hockey team evened its record at 2-2 when it defeated Georgetown, 3-1, this afternoon on Marsha Dodson Field. Cornell saw three different players score in what was a dominating performance.
The Big Red held the significant advantage in shots (26-4) and had the edge in penalty corners (9-5), but the Hoyas were kept in the game by the play of freshman goalie Rosalie Nolen, who made 10 saves.
Cornell received goals from
Elly Plappert,
Georgia Lord and
Katy Weeks, while
Taylor Standiford added an assist. In goal,
Carolyn Horner made one save.
Although she was not credited with an assist, Lord set up the Big Red's first goal when she fed Plappert in the center of the circle. Nolen made the initial save, but Plappert collected her own rebound and put it back for an easy goal to make it 1-0 at the 20:40 mark.
Cornell would get another goal late in the half when
Ann DiPastina drew a foul on a Georgetown defender. Standiford quickly restarted the play and sent a beautiful pass from the top of the circle across the crease to Lord, who was behind the defense and used a fake to beat Nolen and then scored on the open net.
Georgetown (0-6) got on the board with just over 15 minutes to play when Aliyah Graves drove to the baseline and then carried the ball into the circle. Despite being surrounded by several Cornell defenders, Graves managed to bounce a pass over the Big Red sticks and Sarah Butterfield connected from point-blank range to make it a one-goal game.
Cornell added a late insurance goal when Weeks collected a rebound off a save by Nolen and banged it home to account for the 3-1 final.
The Big Red opens Ivy League play next weekend when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Penn on Saturday, Sept. 15 at noon. Cornell, which earned a 4-0 triumph last year over the Quakers, will seek for its first victory on Franklin Field since the 2009 season.
