ITHACA, N.Y. -- Longtime head coach
David Eldredge will attempt to become the first Cornell athletics coach with 850 career victories when his men's and women's polo teams welcome Skidmore to the Oxley Equestrian Center this weekend. The men will play on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m., while the women will square off on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
Eldredge enters the weekend with an impressive 849-292-25 record (.739) in 28 years coaching the Big Red polo squads. He could become the first Cornell coach in history to record 850 career victories. With his 447 wins for the women and 402 for the men, he has the most combined wins of any Cornell athletic coach. Current softball head coach Dick Blood has 588 wins, the most by any Big Red coach for a single sport.
The men's team advanced to the final of the Field Invitational and knocked off Yale en route to a 6-3 finish to the first semester. Cornell will face a Skidmore team it met one already this season, knocking off the Thoroughbreds 37-14 on Nov. 3 in Saratoga Springs behind 22 goals for Nik Feldman.
The Big Red men's polo team has reached the national championship game six times since 2004 under Eldredge, who has amassed an impressive 402-169-8 record (.701) in his 28 years on the sidelines with the men. Cornell has won 19 USPA Eastern Regional titles and has advanced to the national championship game 35 times with 11 national titles.
The women are 8-2 on the year with losses to defending national champion Virginia, a defeat it avenged later in the finals of the Field Invitational, as well as Connecticut. Cornell has won four straight games entering the weekend and is a perfect 7-0 at home. The Big Red will welcome back All-American Kailey Eldredge, who missed the fall while studying abroad.
Cornell has won 12 of the last 15 Northeast Regional titles and five national titles under Eldredge, who has posted a 447-123-17 record (.776) with the program. The Big Red has advanced to the national championship game four times in the last five years.
