Game Highlights
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell senior
Shelby Lyman poured in a career-high 24 points to lead four Big Red players in double-figures as the home team downed Brown, 80-70, this evening in Newman Arena. Cornell, winners of five of its last six games, runs its record to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.
Lyman knocked down 8-of-13 shots, including a blistering 5-of-6 performance from beyond the arc, for her game-high 24 points. Cornell's forward tandem of
Nia Marshall (17 points, 11 rebounds) and
Allyson DiMagno (14 points, 10 rebounds) each registered a double-double and combined for more than half of the Big Red's rebounds as the home team held the significant 40-28 edge on the backboards. Freshman points guard
Kerri Moran had her best game to date with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and handed out eight assists with just two turnovers.
Brown (6-11, 0-3) was led by Lauren Clarke's 22 points and four assists, while Sophie Bikofsky chipped in 13 points. Natalie Ball had a team-high eight rebounds but saw limited action before fouling out of the contest.
Cornell shot a blistering 51.8 percent overall (29-56) for its best shooting performance of the season, and connected on 35.7 percent (5-14) from 3-point range. The Bears shot a respectable 43.6 percent overall (24-55) and hit 42.9 percent (9-21) from beyond the arc, but the Big Red held the edge in points off of turnovers (20-12) and second chance points (10-4).
After a back-and-forth opening four minutes, Cornell scored 10 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the first half (20-9) with 13:06 showing on the clock. The run featured four points apiece from Lyman and DiMagno, as well as a tough driving layup by Moran. Cornell managed to maintain the double-digit lead for the next three minutes but then went cold from the floor and allowed the visitors to get back into the contest with a 16-5 run.
Rebecca Musgrove gave Brown its first lead (30-29) since the opening minute of play with a layup at the 2:08 mark but back-to-back layups from Marshall and Moran restored the lead to the Big Red (33-30).
A trey from KJ Veldman with :09 to go knotted the game but DiMagno knocked down an eight foot baseline jumper at the buzzer to send the home team into the break with the 35-33 lead.
Brown tied the game for the final time with its first points of the second half and then took its final lead of the game with 17:16 to play on a trey from Clarke, but Marshall took over the next six minutes of action, scoring six of the Big Red's points during an 11-2 run.
With just under 10 minutes to play, the Bears made it a four-point game (48-44) on a layup from Clarke, but Lyman nailed a 3-pointer to stop the momentum and moments later, Cornell had extended its lead back to double-digits when another trey by Lyman made it 59-49 with 6:33 to play.
The Bears had one final push in them and managed to make it a three-point game with just over three minutes to go, but the Big Red made some big shots down the stretch, including 6-of-7 free throws in the final minute of action, to seal the 80-70 victory.
Cornell is back in action tomorrow night when it plays host to Yale at Newman Arena at 6 p.m.
