Box Score (PDF)ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's soccer team conceded an early goal, then was stymied by eight saves from Yale goalkeeper Elise Wilcox in a 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. Cornell (6-7, 1-3 Ivy League) has now lost four straight.
Â
Yale (6-4-2, 1-1-2) took the early lead on a goal in the fifth minute by Melissa Gavin. Frannie Coxe served a deep cross from the right side that Gavin was able to get a foot to for a tap-in.
Â
Cornell started to take over territorially as the half wore on, forcing Wilcox to make three saves before the break. With about 19 minutes left, sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Crowell quickly took a free kick from about 25 yards that narrowly missed the far post.
Â
Perhaps the Big Red's best chance of the half came with 7:10 left. Sophomore forward
Meera Marhoefer worked the ball from the right side into the middle, setting up freshman forward
Meera Dheer for a shot from 15 yards. But the ball sailed too quickly, grazing the crossbar on its way over the cage.
Â
The momentum carried over through halftime. Inside the first minute of the second half, sophomore defender
Aimee Tavzel took a free kick from near midfield that sophomore forward
Dempsey Banks flagged down near the end line on the left side. She sent a looping ball over Wilcox that clanked off the crossbar. Freshman defender
Whitney Farber then intercepted the clearing attempt and stepped into a shot from 25 yards, which forced Wilcox to make a diving save to her right.
Â
Wilcox then made her finest save with 22:45 left in the game. Marhoefer and Crowell connected once again, with Marhoefer's service into the box quickly turned on goal by Crowell. But Wilcox got down quickly and steered the ball around the near post with her left hand.
Â
The Big Red gets right back into game action at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, when it plays its final non-league game of the season at NJIT.
