Women's Soccer Snaps Skid With 1-0 Win at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. — Sophomore forward Meera Marhoefer scored in the 37th-minute, and the women's soccer team closed out the non-league portion of its schedule with a 1-0 victory Sunday at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Cornell (7-7) had a 12-0 advantage in shots on goal on the day, with sophomore goalkeeper Dana Daniels earning her first collegiate shutout without being called upon to make a save behind the 90-minute back four of seniors Sydney Cetrullo and Kelly Abrams in the middle, and sophomore Taylor Wright and freshman Kaylee Fitzgerald out wide. The Big Red used a reserve-heavy lineup for the bulk of the day, with just one starter holding over from Saturday's Ivy League clash with Yale.

Marhoefer's goal was her second of the season, and it also provided the first collegiate assist for freshman forward Erin Fitzgerald. She dished a pass to Marhoefer in the right side of the box, then Marhoefer beat her defender before tucking a shot inside the far post.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Big Red, and it's the latest into the season Cornell has won a game since topping Brown on Oct. 26, 2008. It also guaranteed the squad will at least match its win total from last season.

The Big Red has three games remaining on its schedule. Next up is its final road game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Brown. Then Cornell returns home for its final two games, both with 2:30 p.m. kickoffs. The first is Saturday, Nov. 2 vs. Princeton, and the finale Saturday, Nov. 9 vs. Dartmouth.
