CANTON, N.Y. – Senior forwards
Jillian Saulnier and
Emily Fulton netted late goals just 3:05 apart to power Cornell women's hockey to a 4-2 victory over St. Lawrence in a Saturday matinee contest at Appleton Arena. The victory capped a huge four-point weekend on the road against two ECAC Hockey front runners, putting the Big Red firmly in the mix near the top of the conference.
Â
Saulnier put the Big Red ahead for good with just over six minute remaining, finishing a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play between Cornell's explosive top line of forwards. Cornell (6-6-1, 5-2-0 ECAC Hockey) moved into the St. Lawrence (8-6-2, 5-3-1 ECAC Hockey) zone three-on-two. The puck was moved to the left half wall, where team captain
Brianne Jenner made a strong play to fend off the defender and shuffle the puck to Fulton in the right circle. The senior surveyed the scene and labeled a perfect pass to Saulnier who was sitting at the backdoor of Saints net-minder Carmen MacDonald (L, 7-5-2) for the easy tap-in into the wide open cage.
Â
The goal was Saulnier's 66
th of her career, tying her with Catherine White (2008-11) for tenth on the program's all-time scoring list, while she added an assist on Fulton's mark 3:05 later to pass White for fifth all-time in assists (102) and seventh in points (168).
Â
Fulton iced the game for the Big Red with 3:06 remaining. Junior defender
Cassandra Poudrier pinched down low in the Saints end and received a dump-in from Jenner behind the net. She shuffled the puck to Fulton who again was all-alone in the right circle. She ripped a sinister wrister top shelf over the glove of MacDonald for her seventh of the season.
Â
Sophomore goaltender
Paula Voorheis (W, 5-6-1) stood tall in her second game in less than 24 hours between the pipes. She stopped 29-of-31 St. Lawrence shots, including several sparkling saves to keep the Big Red tied after Kailee Heidersbach equalized the score at 2-2 with 12:34 remaining in the third period.
Â
Similar to the Clarkson game the night before, Cornell relinquished the first goal of the game at 10:27 of the first period. With the Big Red possessing the puck in the Saints offensive zone, Jacqueline Wand stripped the puck and started a quick counter breakout. The Cornell defense was caught with some wide spacing at the point and Kennedy Marchment moved up two-on-two with Brooke Webster, who had a step on the defense. Marchment fed her a perfect lead pass, which Webster one-timed past Voorheis for the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Big Red recovered with two goals in the middle frame. Cornell's scoring depth shined for the second consecutive game with sophomores
Brianna Veerman and
Kaitlin Doering tallying goals in the period.
Â
Veerman equalized the game at the 8:02 mark of the second period on the power-play. With Jenna Marks off for holding, the Big Red set up with the player advantage for the first time on the afternoon and took only 13-seconds to capitalize. Freshman
Erin O'Connor started the play at the point, moving the puck to Jenner in the left circle. The senior shuffled the puck into the high-slot to O'Connor. She did not get a much on the shot attempt, but the puck moved perfectly to Veerman who was lurking in the backdoor for the tap-in.
Â
The Big Red scored its first lead of the day 3:12 later. Junior
Jess Brown started the play, moving the puck up to sophomore
Hanna Bunton in the neutral zone. She moved up in a two-on-one with Doering, feeding the latter for a one-time blast past MacDonald for her second goal in as many days and third of the season.
Â
The Big Red's dynamic top line finished the game with the late tallies to move to .500 for the first time this season. Fulton's two point game (1g-1a) was her seventh multi-point game of the season, breaking a four game stretch without one. Jenner finished with three assists to move within three points of tying Cyndy Schlaepfer (1975-78) for fourth on the program's all-time list. She currently sits at 196 for her career.
Â
Cornell heads into the break sitting just four points out of first place in a crowded top half of the conference. The Big Red will return from winter break on Jan. 2, when it takes on Canadian power McGill in an exhibition at Lynah Rink. Cornell will resume ECAC Hockey play on Jan. 9-10, when it welcomes St. Lawrence and Clarkson for return trips to Lynah Rink.
