2/15/2014 6:36:00 PM

HANOVER, N.H. – The men's tennis team began its defense of the ECAC Indoor Championships title with a 4-2 victory over Brown in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Dartmouth's Boss Tennis Center. Junior Quoc-Daniel Nguyen led the Big Red with victories in both matches he played in on the day.

After fifth-seeded and 61st-ranked Brown (3-3) opened by winning the doubles point, fourth-seeded and 62nd-ranked Cornell (5-2) countered by winning four of the five completed singles matches. Junior Sam Fleck got the Big Red on the board by cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position, then Casares Rosa won a second-set tiebreaker at No. 2 to give Cornell a 2-1 lead.

Nguyen followed suit with his own straight-set victory in a tiebreaker, but Brown quickly countered with a win at the No. 5 spot to bring the score, 3-2. Sophomore Stefan Vinti then clinched the match for the Big Red with a 6-4, 6-5(1) victory at the No. 1 spot. Vinti and Casares Rosa are now a combined 7-0 from the top two singles positions.

With the win, the Big Red advances to a 5 p.m. Sunday semifinal against top-seeded and 25th-ranked Harvard. Cornell defeated Harvard in last season's event, when the Crimson was also the No. 1 seed.
