ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 3 Cornell women's hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to Princeton Saturday, 4-3.
Jillian Saulnier had a hand in all three of Cornell's goals but the Big Red (20-5-4, 15-4-3 ECAC Hockey) couldn't hold off the Tigers (14-11-4, 10-9-3) at Lynah Rink.
Saulnier opened up scoring for the Big Red four minutes into the game with help from
Alyssa Gagliardi and Jess Campbell, but Princeton's Kelsey Koelzer answered back two minutes later. At 11:56 in the second period, the Tigers took the lead and went into the final period up 2-1. Brianna Leahy scored unassisted six minutes into the final period to bring the Tigers' lead to two but Saulnier then netted her second of the game at 9:45 to keep the Big Red's hopes alive. With three minutes left to play, Leahy had her second goal for Princeton, taking a 4-2 lead. With the help of an extra skater,
Emily Fulton pushed back with 57 seconds left to again come within one goal but it wasn't enough and the Tigers escaped Lynah with a 4-3 victory.
The Big Red will get a rematch with Princeton on Friday at Lynah Rink for the best-of-three quarterfinal series of the ECAC Hockey tournament.
