ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team opened up the 2014 season with a victory over Temple, 17-9, Sunday at Schoellkopf Field. Senior
Rachel Moody led the way with five goals for the Big Red.
After being tied at three with 15:38 left in the first half, the Big Red broke open the game with 11 unanswered goals. During that run, Moody had three of her five tallies, and junior
Lindsay Toppe and freshman
Catherine Ellis scored two goals apiece. Cornell took a 12-3 lead into halftime and came back out to notch two more before Temple could answer. The Owls (1-2) then went on a 5-0 rally, but Cornell (1-0) finished strong in its first game of the season.
Toppe and Ellis each netted four goals and sophomore
Emily Tripodi contributed five assists. Freshman
Renee Poullott and Junior
Carly Gniewek combined for nine saves. Cornell outshot Temple 20-7 in the first half and dominated the draw controls, winning 18 of 28.
All of the Owls' goals were unassisted and Jaymie Tabor led the team with three while teammates Nicole Tiernan and Rachel Schwaab each had two. Rachel Hall and Jaqi Kakalecik combined for seven saves.
The Big Red returns to action on March 1 when it visits Ivy League rival Harvard for a 1 p.m. contest.
