Pivotal Ivy League Matches On Tap For Men's Tennis

4/2/2014 12:23:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's tennis team will play host to two pivotal Ivy League matches this weekend at Reis Tennis Center. The 46th-ranked Big Red will take on 41st-ranked Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Saturday and 34th-ranked Harvard at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Cornell (10-5, 0-1 Ivy League) had a five-match winning streak snapped last Saturday in a 7-0 loss to Columbia in the squads' league debut. Many of the matches were close, however, with the Big Red winning one of the three doubles matches and forcing a third set in three of the six singles matches.

Sophomore Stefan Vinti has won five of his last six matches in singles, while freshmen Chris Vrabel and Bernardo Casares Rosa have both won four of their last five in singles competition. In doubles, the lone victory against the Lions came from the junior tandem of Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen at the No. 2 spot. The team of junior Sam Fleck and Vrabel is currently ranked 69th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Dartmouth holds a 43-21-2 advantage in the all-time series against Cornell, though the Big Red has won five of the last seven meetings. The Big Green won the most recent meeting, 4-1, on Feb. 17 in the consolation bracket at the ECAC Indoor Championships. The Big Red won last year's Ivy League meeting, 5-2, on April 6 at Hanover, N.H. Luu and Nguyen won their doubles match, then both went on to win their respective singles matches. Fleck (No.2) and junior Alex Sidney (No. 3) accounted for the Big Red's other points.

Dartmouth (13-4) has won four of its last five matches coming into its Ivy opener against the Big Red. The Big Green has been idle since a three-match swing through Virginia from March 20-22. Dartmouth dropped a 4-2 decision at Virginia Commonwealth before defeating Old Dominion the following day. Cornell also made that trip in March, defeating both opponents. Dovydas Sakinis is the team's primary No. 1 singles competitor. The doubles team of Cameron Ghorbani and Brendan Tannebaum is ranked 20th in the country.

Harvard (11-5 coming into Saturday's match at Columbia) has spent time in the ITA's top 30 this year after winning the Ivy League for a second consecutive season last year. The Crimson defeated St. John's, 5-2, last Sunday in its final non-league tuneup. Prior to that, Harvard finished in second place at the Mission Valley Spring Classic in California with victories over Denver and San Diego before a finals loss to Drake. Denis Nguyen is ranked 31st in the country in singles and teams with Casey MacMaster to comprise the 11th-ranked doubles team. Also, Sebastian Beltrame is ranked 111th in singles and the duo of Brian Yeung and Nicky Hu is ranked 80th in doubles.

Harvard leads the all-time series, 61-11, though the programs have split their last six meetings. The Crimson defeated the Big Red, 4-0, in the semifinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships in February. Cornell defeated Harvard, 4-2, on Feb. 16, 2013 en route to capturing last year's ECAC Indoor Championships at Reis Tennis Center.

Live scores for each match will be posted here.
