Late Runs Push Baseball Past Binghamton, 6-1

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior Kevin Tatum drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, then the baseball team tacked on four more runs in the ninth inning to defeat Binghamton, 6-1, on Wednesday and win its fourth straight game.
 
Seven Big Red pitchers surrendered just an unearned run while racking up 11 strikeouts against the Bearcats. Sophomore Matt Horton after stranding the two runners he inherited in the seventh inning and setting down the only five batters he faced – including three strikeouts.
 
Sophomore Jordan Winawer, making his first collegiate start, was 2-for-4 with two runs. He opened the scoring in the third inning after leading off the frame by getting hit by a pitch, followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. Senior Tom D'Alessandro then lined out to center field, which allowed Winawer to tag up and score.
 
After Binghamton (9-15) tied the game with its only run in the sixth inning – unearned because of a failed pickoff – Cornell (14-11) took the lead back in the eighth. Senior Ryan Plantier drew a two-out walk, then departed the game in favor of pinch runner Dan Morris. Senior Chris Cruz followed with a single, advancing Morris to second, then Tatum drove in the go-ahead with a single through the right side of the infield.
 
The Big Red expanded its lead to five runs after sending 10 batters to the plate in the ninth. The first run scored on a balk, then D'Alessandro (sac fly), junior Ryan Karl (single) and senior Jimmy Sikorski (walk) drove in the others.
 
Cornell concludes its 11-game stretch of road games this weekend with a pair of Ivy League doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Lou Gehrig Division-leading Penn.
