Harris, Imhotep, Shapiro Elected 2014 Cornell Football Captains

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell football team elected three seniors as captains for the 2014 season. All-Ivy League candidates Justin Harris, Rush Imhotep and Lucas Shapiro received an overwhelming majority of votes from their upperclassmen teammates to lead the squad into the upcoming campaign.

"When I saw the results of our team elected vote for captains I couldn't be more pleased. The coaching staff unanimously approved the choices of Rush Imhotep, Justin Harris and Lucas Shapiro to serve as the 2014 captains of Big Red football," said David Archer '05, the Roger J. Weiss '61 Head Coach of Cornell Football. "Being captains of this team is a special honor and its one that is earned over years of constant, consistent hard work and caring for your teammates. These guys embody the positive influence and levels of leadership that we promote and develop in our program. I'm excited and honored to have Lucas, Justin and Rush as our team captains."

Harris returns for a fifth season of eligibility and is expected to be among the top defensive linemen in the Ivy League. A year ago, Harris ranked second among Cornell's defensive front with 40 tackles and four pass breakups. He notched three tackles and a pass breakup vs. Columbia and had five tackles at Dartmouth. The 6-6, 268-pound Harris recorded six tackles and picked up a fumble and returned it for a 2-yard touchdown at eventual Ivy League champion Princeton and also tacked on four tackled in contests against Bucknell, Colgate, Brown and Harvard.

One of the team's unquestioned defensive leaders from his safety position, Imhotep was off to a fantastic start in 2013 before he suffered an injury and missed the final eight games of the year. He posted seven tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a forced fumble before suffering his injury. Imhotep ranked second on the team in tackles as a sophomore in 2012 (65) and added three pass breakups and 1.5 tackles for loss in nine contests, all starts. Imhotep played in all 10 games as a freshman in 2011, earning his first varsity letter, and recording six tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.

Shapiro emerged as one of the Ivy League's top wide receivers in 2013 and will be a featured player again as a senior. He ranked among the conference's leaders in receptions (38), receiving yards (600) and receiving touchdowns (six) while averaging 15.8 yards per catch in nine starts a year ago. Shapiro had a pair of 100-yard games and opened the season with a touchdown reception in each of his first five contests. He saved his best for last, catching 10 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown in the season-ending win at Penn. Shapiro enters his senior year just 250 yards shy of becoming the 21st receiver in Cornell history to reach 1,000 career yards.

The trio will lead the Big Red onto the field for the first time when the Big Red visits Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
