ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak against Binghamton come to an end this evening, as the Bearcats swept Cornell, 3-0, in the final non-conference game of the season for both teams. The visitors escaped Newman Arena, winning 25-22, 25-20, 25-14.
Macey Wilson led the Big Red with a .353 hitting percentage with eight kills and just two errors on 17 attempts to go along with three blocks (one solo), while
Maddy Sroufe had a team-high 10 kills and added nine digs. Setter
Alyssa Phelps was also solid with 22 assists and seven digs to go along with a .375 hitting percentage (3-0-8). Libero
Natasha Rowland finished with 15 digs.
Binghamton (2-14) hit an impressive .261 for the match, led by Allison Hovie (13-4-27) and Megan Burgess (13-1-26), who combined to hit .396 from the floor. Setter Amanda Dettmann handed out 35 assists, while libero Bailey Walker tallied 15 digs.
Cornell opened the match with a bang, thanks to a pair of kills each from Wilson and Sroufe. The Bearcats continued to battle and managed to knot the set at 7-7, but a kill and a service ace by Sroufe pushed the lead back to 9-7. Binghamton came back again and took its first lead at 12-11 with a kill from Dettmann. The teams tied twice more before the visitors managed to slowly build a 20-16 advantage and then hang on for the 25-22 victory.
The second set was the tightest contested of the night with nine ties and six lead changes, but with the score knotted at 16-16, the Bearcats rattled off seven consecutive points to take a commanding lead. A kill by
Gabrielle Ennis ended the Binghamton run but it was too little, too late, at the visitors earned the 25-20 win.
The Bearcats came out on fire in the third set, using three kills by Burgess, two by Alexis LaGoy and one by Allison Hovie, along with a service ace by Dettman to get out to a 10-3 lead. Cornell was unable to dig out of the hole, despite a solid performance from Wilson, who finished the set with three kills and no errors on five attempts.
Cornell (3-7) opens Ivy League play on Saturday, Sept. 27 when the Big Red travels to Columbia for a contest at 2 p.m. Cornell won both matches against the Lions last season to improve its commanding lead in the all-time series to 48-10.
