POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender
Hayden Stewart made 36 saves for his second shutout of the season, and sophomore forwards
Matt Buckles and
Jake Weidner scored goals to power the Cornell men's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Clarkson on Saturday night at Cheel Arena.
Â
The victory snapped a four-game winless skid for Cornell (6-7-2, 4-4 ECAC Hockey), which won its first road game of the season in its fourth attempt.
Â
The first period didn't feature many scoring opportunities for either side, with the Golden Knights firing at will from all areas of the ice to take a 19-6 lead in shots on goal.
Â
The second period was decidedly different, though, with the Big Red killing off three Clarkson power plays in the middle frame. On the first, junior defenseman
Reece Willcox made a huge shot block, then Stewart slid across to his left to stop Joe Zarbo's one-timer from the right circle.
Â
Clarkson goalie Ville Runola made the save of the night at the 10:42 mark, stacking the pads and flashing his glove to stop senior forward
Madison Dias from point-blank range after senior defenseman
Jacob MacDonald forced an awkward save with a tricky shot toward the upper-corner on the near post. A few seconds later in the same four-on-four scenario, Runola gloved Bliss' point shot through traffic.
Â
Stewart then narrowly averted damage at the other end minutes before Cornell broke the ice. At the 13:40 mark, he gloved a shot from Troy Josephs coming down the slot. Twenty-seven seconds later, Josephs' jam attempt on a rush up the right wing got behind the Big Red goalie. Clarkson's Todd Christian stormed the crease to try to poke the puck over the line, but couldn't connect before knocking the net off its moorings.
Â
About 90 seconds later, sophomore forward
Eric Freschi won a faceoff to Runola's right and Buckles helped the puck back to the left point. From there, freshman defenseman
Ryan Bliss fired a shot that hit traffic in front. Buckles circled through the slot and was first to the puck toward the edge of the crease, chipping the rebound over Runola to give the Big Red the lead for the first time in five games. Buckles is now tied with senior forward
Joel Lowry and junior forward
Christian Hilbrich for the team in goals with four.
Â
Weidner then ended the Big Red's stretch of 17 unsuccessful power plays just 50 seconds into the third period by finishing off a pretty passing play for his first goal of the season. Senior defenseman
Joakim Ryan had his shot from the center point blocked, but senior forward
John McCarron tracked it down on the left point and chipped it deeper in the zone. Hilbrich made a quick touch to spring Bardreau into space toward the bottom of the left circle. He then slid a perfect pass across the slot to Weidner, who converted into the empty wide side of the net.
Â
Cornell then stifled Clarkson for much of the final period. The Big Red survived 1:21 of a two-man disadvantage, with Ryan making a huge shot block with his right arm and Stewart flagging down the only shot on goal from distance. The Big Red has now killed off 19 consecutive two-man disadvantages dating back to February 2012.

Cornell wraps up its season-high stretch of six straight games away from home next weekend with trips to Union on Friday, Jan. 16 and Rensselaer on Saturday, Jan. 17. Both games will face off at 7:07 p.m. and be televised by Time Warner Cable SportsChannel in most upstate New York markets.
