Box Score (PDF)PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cornell women's hockey returned to action Saturday afternoon, intent on securing a big weekend road sweep with a victory at Brown. The Big Red did just that, outlasting the Bears 4-2 at Meehan Auditorium to move to 7-2-2 in ECAC Hockey play.
Senior
Brianne Jenner tallied the game-winner with 1:49 remaining in the second period, while the Big Red was on the powerplay. She would finish with a goal and an assist in the contest.
Freshman netminder
Amelia Boughn stopped 19-of-21 shots to mark her second career victory in as many starts.
Junior forward
Jess Brown, sophomore defender
Sydney Smith and junior center
Taylor Woods added the other goals for Cornell in the victory.
Cornell (9-6-3, 7-2-2 ECAC Hockey, 4-1-0 Ivy League) controlled the opening 20 minutes of play despite some early penalty trouble. The Big Red outshot the Bears 13-to-8 in the first period; however it was Brown (4-15-0, 1-11-0 ECAC Hockey, 0-4-0 Ivy League) that would crack the scoreboard first with 56 seconds remaining in the period.
The play started promising for Cornell as
Kaitlin Doering corralled a puck in the neutral zone and moved down the right wing into the Brown end two-on-one with
Emily Fulton. With the pass defended, Doering looked to pick the short side on the Bears goaltender Monica Elvin, but the shot was high and wide. Senior defender Lauren Vella made a quick outlet pass to senior Brittany Moorehead at the right point. She moved the puck to senior Janice Young who was streaking with speed through the neutral zone. After moving into the Cornell ended she opened up for a shot and fired one low on freshman netminder
Amelia Boughn. The rookie knocked the puck away with the stick, but the rebound bounced off Moorehead, who was crashing the crease, eventually ending up behind in the net behind Boughn for a 1-0 Brown lead.
Cornell responded in quick fashion just 26 seconds later. Buzzing in the Brown zone, Doering moved the puck to the right point to
Cassandra Poudrier. The junior defender unleashed a slapper that was wide of the cage, but the rebound came hard off the boards to
Jess Brown at the side of the net. She made a silky smooth play to backhand the puck off of Elvin and into the net for her sixth of the season, knotting the score at 1-1.
The lead would be short lived as Brown would tally while shorthanded just four minutes into the period. After struggling to maintain possession in the Brown end the puck came out to center ice. Senior forward Sarah Robson attacked the Cornell zone one-on-two and fired a slapper that beat Boughn five-hole for a 2-1 lead.
The Big Red would respond following the tally, scoring two goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission on goals from
Sydney Smith and
Brianne Jenner.
Cornell would equalize with 5:56 remaining in the middle frame on Smith's first of the season. With the Big Red again applying pressure in the Brown zone,
Caroline DeBruin moved the puck behind the net. Senior Kaitlyn Keon controlled puck down low for the Bears, but her backhand exit pass attempt bounced off of
Emily Fulton at the side of the crease and redirected to a wide-open Smith between the circles. She lasered a slap-shot top shelf over Elvin's glove to tie the game at 2-2.
The Big Red would take its first lead of the game with 1:49 remaining in the period on Jenner's 10
th of the season, with the goal coming on the powerplay. Although Cornell would fail to capitalize on a brief five-on-three advantage, the senior captain would ensure the team wouldn't come away from the lengthy advantage empty handed. Poudrier again started the play, doing a nice job to keep the puck just inside the zone at the left point. She moved the puck to Jenner who peeled of the left wall and had acres of space. She moved into the high-slot and ripped a howitzer past Elvin to put Cornell up 3-2.
With the lead for the first time on the day, the Big Red was intent on extending it in the final 20 minutes. Cornell would push the pace the majority of the period, finally adding an insurance goal on a powerplay tally by
Taylor Woods with 2:22 remaining. Working the puck around the zone, Jenner pushed the puck to
Erin O'Connor at the left point. She launched a slapper that Woods deflected in from six-feet out to put Cornell up for good at 4-2.
The Big Red will return to action next weekend when it hits the road again for ECAC Hockey and Ivy League matchups at Dartmouth and Harvard.
