Men's Polo Kicks Off 2015 With Win Over UConn

STORRS, Conn. -- A day after picking up his 900th collegiate win in the women's polo season opener, Cornell head coach David Eldredge won game No. 425 with the men as his Big Red kicked off the 2015-16 campaign with a 19-7 victory over Connecticut.

With only one returning starter in Ignacio Masias, Cornell had a tough challenge in regional rival Connecticut. Ryan Saul and Dan Shaw filled the other two starting spots as the Big Red looked to open on a positive note.  UConn opened up with the first goal, and then after Cornell answered, scored the third of the match to go ahead 2-1. Cornell responded with three straight to end the first up 4-2. The second saw Cornell add three more to take a 7-2 lead before extending the advantage to 10-3 at the half. The third chukker saw Cornell's defense again show strong as they shut out UConn while scoring six times to take a commanding 16-3 lead heading into the fourth. Liam Palacios replace Shaw in the fourth as Cornell cruised to the 19-7 season opening win.

Of Cornell's 12 fouls in the contest, 11 were in their offensive end and only one in the defensive end. Masias topped all scorers with 11 goals, Saul tallied four, Shaw had two and there were two points awarded on a penalty goal as Eldredge improved his all-time record to 901-304-25 as a head coach and 425-175-8 with the men.
