ITHACA, N.Y. — Jeff Kubiak had a goal and three assists, and junior Matt Buckles' two goals capped off the men's hockey team's five-goal first-period blitz against Ryerson on Saturday night. The Big Red went on to win its first exhibition of the season, 5-2, at Lynah Rink.

Christian Hilbrich opened the scoring on the power play, spinning out from behind the net and jamming a shot underneath Ryerson starting goalie Troy Passingham just 1:31 into the game. Kubiak's goal came on a two-man advantage at the 9:50 mark after his pass intended for a player on top of the crease deflected in off a defenseman. Freshman defenseman Alec McCrea then faked a shot from the point before threading a pass through the slot to set up Ryan Bliss' goal a couple minutes later.

Buckles then stretched the lead to four goals by finishing off a pretty three-on-two with Hilbrich and Jake Weidner. Buckles then capped the scoring on a heavy shot from the left circle just after a power play expired. Cornell outshot Ryerson, which competes in Ontario University Athletics, by a margin of 41-20.

Mitch Gillam made 18 saves for the win. Cornell returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday against Laurentian in its second and final exhibition before next weekend's season-opening pair of games against Niagara.
