Robert Hatter led the Big Red with 14 points and six assists, while classmate
David Onuorah tied his career high with 15 rebounds and chipped in five blocked shots as Cornell improved to 3-2. The Nittany Lions lost its first game of the season, dropping to 4-1.
Hatter led three double figure scorers with his 14 points and added four rebounds anf two steals to his six assists.
Matt Morgan, fresh off being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday, added 12 points, three rebounds, two rebounds and two steals for his fifth straight double figure scoring game to open his career.
Darryl Smith hit for 10 points and
Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof had nine points and four rebounds. Onuorah, who is now averaging 12.5 rebounds over his last four games, scored seven points and anchored a defense that limited its Division III foe to 30 percent shooting overall and 21 percent from 3-point range to go along with 19 turnovers.
PSU-Harrisburg got 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals from Jourdon Wilsonm but no other player scored more than five pooints. Gbolahan Alliyu had seven rebounds and three blocked shots in the loss, while Austin Ghimuma notched six points and two assists in just 13 minutes of action.
Cornell outscored the smaller Nittany Lions 43-24 in the paint and 12-4 on second chance points despite PSU-Harrisburg outrebounding the Big Red 14-11 on the offensive boards.
After Anthony Morgan sunk a three-pointer to put Penn State Harrisburg ahead, 5-4, junior
JoJo Fallas and Morgan each added shots from beyond the arc to give Cornell a 10-7 lead. Fallas, who scored eight points and had a game-high three steals off the bench for the Big Red, was then fouled on a layup and made the resulting free throw for a three-point play and a 13-9 Big Red lead. Two straight baskets from the Nittany Lions tied the game at 13, but Hatter's trey put Cornell on top 16-13 at the second media timeout, a lead the Big Red wouldn't again surrender.
The Big Red defense held Penn State Harrisburg scoreless for five minutes, 10 seconds midway through the first half, jumping out to a 22-13 lead. A three-pointer from Jourdon Wilson and Arick Sodini's jumper brought the Nittany Lions back within six, but a pair of threes from Hatter and Smith gave Cornell a 30-18 advantage.
Tariq Bennett got a fast break after stealing the ball near half court, but Smith hustled back and swatted his shot out of the air, preserving the Big Red's 36-23 lead with a minute left in the half.
The Lions scored the first five points of the second half, but Cornell responded with a dunk from Hatter on a fast break pass from Morgan and a three-point play from Smith, who drew a foul on his layup and sunk the free throw.
The Big Red pushed its lead to 20 on a Onuorah basket with 12:25 left before freshman
Joel Davis' three-pointer gave Cornell a 59-36 advantage. Morgan went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in the second half to give the Big Red its largest lead of the game at 71-45 with 4:18 to go. Senior
Robert Mischler added four points off the bench late in the game with the Big Red sailing to a 29-point victory.
The Big Red travels to Pittsburgh for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Nov. 27. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
