Women’s Hockey Beats Vermont, Wins Windjammer Classic

Box Score (PDF)

BURLINGTON, VT. – Women's hockey cruised to the Windjammer Classic title Sunday afternoon, using three power-play goals to breeze past Vermont, 4-0. Junior goaltender Paula Voorheis posted her first shutout of the season. Senior defenseman Cassandra Poudrier was named the tournament's MVP and to the All-Tournament Team, while forwards Pippy Gerace and Taylor Woods and goaltender Marlene Boissonnault also earned All-Tournament honors.

After fending off the Catamounts' offense in the early goings,  sophomore Sarah Knee's first goal of the season put the Big Red in front at 17:04 of the opening frame with assists to junior Hanna Bunton and freshman Micah Hart.

Poudrier scored her second power play goal of the weekend on a shot from the point at 2:52 of the second period to give the Big Red a 2-0 lead. Hart and Doering were credited with the helpers. Since scoring its first man-advantage tally of the season—Hart's first career point on Nov. 20 at Mercyhurst—Cornell now has at least one power play goal in each of its four games since and Hart has accumulated six points over the same span.

Late in the second period, Woods drew a tripping penalty and then capitalized on it, redirecting a shot from sophomore Erin O'Connor who had received a pass from Poudrier. Gerace, who had a goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-2 win over Boston University, added the Big Red's fourth goal—and third power-play goal—at 6:03 of the third on a shot from the left circle with O'Connor and Poudrier once again getting the assist.

After the first period, Voorheis didn't see much action, having to make just 16 saves for the shutout.

Cornell is now .500 for the first time this season at 5-5-2, while Vermont dropped to 3-13-0. The Big Red jumps back into ECAC Hockey play next weekend with a trip to North Country. St. Lawrence is first at 7 p.m. on Friday before Clarkson at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
