CANTON, N.Y. — Senior Jess Brown scored her second career hat trick to give Cornell a 4-3 win in a tightly contested battle with St. Lawrence on Friday night at Appleton Arena. The victory has given the Big Red a winning record for the first time this season at 6-5-2 (2-2-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Saints moved to 9-8-1 (4-3-0 ECAC Hockey).

St. Lawrence put pressure on early, firing 10 shots on goal in the game's first 10 minutes, but it was Cornell that broke through first with Brown's first tally of the night at 9:44 of the first frame with an assist to junior Kaitlin Doering.

The Big Red killed a penalty, but Nadine Edney scored an even strength goal with just over a minute remaining in the period to knot the score at one.

The teams traded chances early in the second before Cornell regained the advantage on junior Brianna Veerman's third goal of the season 3:38 into the frame with senior Taylor Woods and freshman Micah Hart getting credit for the helpers. Hart, who netted her first career goal on Nov. 20, now has points in five straight games.

St. Lawrence pushed back and once again found an equalizer, this time off the stick of Brooke Webster at 9:13. The Saints had back-to-back power play opportunities late in the period, but the Cornell penalty kill allowed just one shot while mustering two shorthanded chances at the other end. A man-advantage opportunity for the Big Red resulted in Brown's second of the night with just under two minutes to go in the second. Since scoring its first power play goal of the season on Nov. 20 at Mercyhurst, Cornell has netted eight man-advantage goals in five games.

At 6:42 of the third, Brown completed her hat trick, notching her fifth goal of the season with assists from junior Hanna Bunton and Doering to give Cornell its biggest lead of the night.

The Saints attempted to rally, with Edney getting her second of the night at 14:44 to make it 4-3 and Sonija Shelly leaving the St. Lawrence net in favor of an extra attacker with 1:16 to go, but the score held, giving the Big Red its fourth straight victory.

Junior goaltender Paula Voorheis made 23 stops in the winning effort, which extended the Big Red's unbeaten streak against St. Lawrence to 11 games.

Cornell will play its second North Country matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Clarkson at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights fell to Colgate, 4-3, in overtime on Friday night.
