Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell women's hockey kicked off its final homestand of the regular season on Friday evening when it welcomed #4/4 Harvard to Lynah Rink. Although senior Emily Fulton netted a goal to put the 10th ranked Big Red up 1-0 just 2:27 into the contest, Harvard was too strong for the home team on this night, ultimately winning the game by a 4-1 final. The loss drops Cornell to 12-5-2 in ECAC Hockey play, falling one-point behind St. Lawrence for the fourth seed with three games to play.

Junior Taylor Woods started the scoring play for Cornell (14-9-3, 12-5-2 ECAC Hockey), corralling the puck behind the Big Red net and whipping an outlet pass up to Fulton on the right wing boards. The senior sniper took it coast-to-coast, cut to the slot between the circles, making a beautiful patient play to open up Harvard (20-4-2, 15-3-1 ECAC Hockey) netminder Emerance Maschmeyer's five-hole, before slipping a shot into the back of the net.

Sophomore goaltender Paula Voorheis (L, 12-9-3) made 38 saves in the defeat. She held the Big Red in it, as the Crimson pressed to extend the lead in the third period, but Cornell was not able to generate enough offense to mount a comeback.

Sophomore winger Sydney Daniels netted two goals for Harvard, while senior Samantha Reber added a powerplay tally and junior Mary Parker capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.

The turning point in the game came with around six minutes left in the opening period. With the Big Red controlling play for the majority of the opening stanza, including Fulton's 20th of the season to stake the home squad to the 1-0 lead, the Crimson struck twice in a span of 19 seconds to push ahead.

The first goal came on an excellent play by Daniels. With Cornell controlling the puck in the Crimson end, Kalley Armstrong made an excellent play at the half wall to pry the puck free and chip it past the pinching Taylor Woods to Daniels at center ice. She sped down the right wing to gain position on freshman blue-liner Erin O'Connor, who was charging hard back, but was at the end of her shift. Daniels made a power move to the net and fought through a holding penalty on O'Connor. Her initial shot was denied, but she pounced on the rebound at the side of the net and flipped it past Voorheis into the cage.

On the ensuing penalty, Harvard needed only 19 seconds to pull ahead. After an initial zone clearance by Cornell, the Crimson struck quick in transition. Sarah Edney made a nice pass to free up Parker in space. The juniors initial shot was blockered away by Voorheis, but again the rebound fell to the blade to a Harvard player. Reber drove the quick wrister into the yawning cage.

Cornell held its own throughout the middle period, putting together a couple promising chances with the powerplay, but the Harvard defense held strong. The Crimson did an excellent job insulating Maschmeyer in the crease and limiting the amount of shots the Big Red could get through.

The Crimson tallied a third goal just 5.6 seconds before intermission. After a penalty on Cornell senior Jillian Saulnier had just expired, Daniels netted her second of the game on a nice down low play with Armstrong and Lyndsey Fry. Armstrong moved the puck down low to Fry, who made a quick play to spin around and whip the puck across the crease. Daniels was in perfect position at the backdoor to tap it into the cage.

The Big Red will play its final home regular season game tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Dartmouth for a 4 p.m. faceoff at Lynah Rink. Cornell will honor seniors Brianne Jenner, Emily Fulton and Jillian Saulnier in a on-ice ceremony at the conclusion of the contest with the Big Green.
