CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior
Sam Fleck and sophomore
Chris Vrabel each won singles matches, but the men's tennis dropped a marathon match against Princeton in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships on Saturday morning at Harvard.
Fifth-seeded and 63rd-ranked Cornell (3-4) started the day strong, winning the doubles point.
Bernardo Casares Rosa and Vrabel teamed up to win at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, then
Stefan Vinti and
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen clinched the opening point with a 7-5 decision at No. 3.
Vrabel extended the Big Red's lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory at No. 5 against nationally-ranked Luke Gamble, finishing the match by dominating a second-set tiebreaker. But just six minutes later, Princeton surged by a 3-2 margin by finishing up victories at positions 1, 4 and 6.
The final two matches required a third set, and each went to a tiebreaker. Fleck rallied from one set down against Alex Day at the No. 3 position. He took the second set, 6-4, then outlasted Day in the third-set tiebreaker, 7-6(6), to knot the match at 3. Fourth-seeded and 57th-ranked Princeton (6-0) later locked up the match in a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot.
Due to the blizzard in the metro Boston area, Cornell's backdraw match against Yale has been canceled.
