CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The women's squash team was defeated by Trinity, 9-0, in the quarterfinals of the College Squash Association's Howe Cup national championships on Friday at Murr Center. With the loss, the sixth-ranked Big Red (8-6) will meet up with seventh-ranked Columbia in the consolation semifinals at 4 p.m. Saturday.
This marks the seventh consecutive season the Big Red has qualified for the Howe Cup by being ranked in the CSA's top eight at the conclusion of the regular season. Cornell has not defeated third-ranked Trinity in any of the programs' 13 all-time meetings. Trinity, the defending national champion, advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Sophomore
Rachel Scherman came closest to getting the Big Red on the board against the Bantams, winning two of the first three sets in her match against Anna Kimberley at the No. 3 position — but Kimberley rallied to win in five. All eight other matches ended in three sets.
Should the Big Red defeat Columbia on Saturday, it would guarantee itself at least a sixth-place finish in the national rankings for the fourth consecutive season.
Matches of this year's Howe Cup will be broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network throughout the weekend. For more information, click here. (
