Wines Takes Fifth In Epee At Junior Olympics

RICHMOND, Va. – More than 1,600 fencers ages 20 and under competed for junior national titles and berths on the 2015 Junior and Cadet World Championship Team at the Junior Olympics, held Feb. 13-16 in Richmond, Va. Three members of the Big Red fencing program participated, with Victoria Wines taking fifth overall in the epee competition.

Wines went 6-0 in the opening round and posted an incredible plus-21 touch differential in pool play to earn the top ranking. After a bye in the first direct elimination round, she went on to post wins over 129th-seed Gabriella Leccese (15-13), 65th-seed Catherine Hallsten (15-13), 31st-seed Barbara Vanbenthuysen (15-12), and 16th-seed Mason Speta (15-10). Wines was finally tripped up in the quarterfinals by eventual bronze medal winner, Sancchi Kukadia, falling 15-13. Ā

Wines and several other members of the Big Red will participate in the NCAA Northeast Regional, held on March 8 at NYU's Coles Sports Center in New York City.Ā
