Women’s Lacrosse Blasts Binghamton 22-3

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's lacrosse was dominant on both ends of the field on Wednesday evening, blasting Binghamton 22-3 at Schoellkopf Field. The 22 goal output was the most since the Big Red equaled the number in 22-13 victory at Jacksonville University on March 20, 2012.

The prolific offensive display was of historic proportions, as the Big Red equaled its highest single-game output for goals in program history. In addition to the Jacksonville matchup three seasons ago, Cornell also tallied 22 in a victory over Rutgers in the season finale of the 1994 season. The 19 goal margin of victory was the second highest in the history of the program, falling just one goal short of the top mark – a 21-1 victory over William Smith – in the season finale of the Big Red's inaugural season as a varsity program in 1972.

It was an all-around great effort for Cornell (4-1), as the team had 12 players find the back of the net against the overmatched Bearcats (3-2). The Big Red was led by junior Emily Tripodi and sophomore Catherine Ellis, who both notched identical six-point performances with four goals and two assists each. Junior Olivia Mattyasovszky also had a huge game coming off the bench, tallying four goals and an assist in the second half to notch her first multi-goal game.

Sophomore mid Amie Dickson continued her excellent play, collecting five points for the fourth time in five games this season. She tallied two goals and three assists. Freshman Taylor Reed (1g-1a), sophomore Kristy Gilbert (1g-2a) and freshman Ida Farinholt (1g-1a) also collected multi-point efforts in the matchup.

It was a special game for sophomore Mandy Powell and freshman Paige Craig who both marked their first career collegiate goals in an impressive second half. Senior Sarah Hefner, sophomore Shelby McNeilly, and freshman Joey Coffy also tallied goals for the Big Red.

As impressive as Cornell was on the offensive end, it was equally strong in the defensive third. Sophomore Catie Smith had a monster game with one caused turnover, four ground balls, and three draw controls. Junior co-captain Brittany Marriott added two ground balls, while senior Claire MacManus blanketed Binghamton attackers all game in a smothering performance. Reed led all Cornell players with two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Renee Poullott was strong when called upon. The reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week made three saves on six shots on goal. The three goals was the least amount of goals allowed by a Big Red team since a 14-3 victory at Yale on April 23, 2011.

As has been the case throughout the early season, Cornell got off to a flying start. The home team tallied two goals in the opening 47 seconds of play, as Dickson and Tripodi worked a classic give-and-go for the opening score, while Tripodi found her own goal on the backdoor to double the lead. The Big Red would go on to score the first six goals to jump out to a commanding lead in the opening 10 minutes of play.

After Callon Williams broke the ice with a goal for the Bearcats, the Big Red would tally the next five to blow the game open. Tripodi would add her third goal of the half during the stretch, while Ellis also would notch her hat-trick after receiving a great pass from Reed inside the crease. Coffy capped the scoring run with a free position goal, beating Binghamton goalkeeper Erin McNulty five-hole.

Ellis would add her fourth goal in just over 22 minutes on an excellent individual play. As the Bearcats looked to setup a quick clear, the sophomore stripped McNulty of the ball at the side of the net, while in one motion she scooped and scored top corner to give Cornell a 12-2 lead. McNeilly would add another before the halftime horn to stretch the advantage to 11 at the break. Cornell outshot Binghamton 22-to-5 in the opening 30 minutes of play.

Cornell picked up right where it left off in the second half. Tripodi added her fourth goal just 20 seconds into the half, receiving a great feed at the backdoor from Gilbert. After Brianne Arthur scored a goal for the Bearcats, Cornell rattled off the final eight goals of the game to put the finishing touches on the impressive performance.

Hefner started the run on a nice turning shot from the top of the eight-yard arc off a nice freed from Dickson. Mattyasovsky would add her first of the season, while Powell would mark her first career goal on a beautiful penetrative run through the Binghamton zone to push the lead to 18-3.

Mattyasovszky would add the next three tallies to notch her first career hat trick. The second goal was an absolute rocket on a free position shot. She loaded up a shot from the top of the eight-yard arc and fired a howitzer that beat new Bearcat keeper Emma Jehle top corner.

Craig capped the scoring for the Big Red with her first career marker. After receiving a perfect entry feed inside the eight-yard arc, she wheeled around and whipped the ball low into the twine.

Cornell will return to action on Saturday, as the squad hits the road for the second consecutive weekend to begin Ivy League play. The Big Red will travel to New York City to take-on in-state rival Columbia. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
